Selling a boat on Gumtree
Submitted by SpotHound on Fri, 2016-03-04 17:34
Trying to sell my boat on Gumtree, I think every wierdo in Perth has rung me.
I get offers way way below the asking price, and they have not even seen it, what with that ?
Will they want even more off when they arrive? Not that any do after promising to come.
Why do they ask if the boat is still for sale, it clearly states in the ad that if the add is up, its still for sale.

I went through it not that
I went through it not that long ago and I feel your pain
You'd get the ones offering 30%+ less on a weekly basis
If you've got a fair price you'll get the right person through eventually but it'll mean a lot of tyre kickers, people wanting to trade their shitbox car and dreamers inbetween

Yea I have had some mixed
Yea I have had some mixed results from Gumtree.
On a couple of occations it's been a simple call, they turn up and buy whatever it is I am selling .....but ....Only on a couple of occasions !!
Just be very wary of anyone e-mailing you and offering MORE than what you are asking which has happened to me several times.
Usually from some halfwit that recons they work on an offshore rig somewhere and has "Limited" internet access...they can hardly put a sentence together even though he claimed to be an off shore engineer !!
Just trust your gut and tell the strange ones to f off..
I had the same bloke who tried to rip me off once contact me three more times on different items I was selling !!
Good luck

Is it still for sale
The reason people ask that is because a lot of people sell something and are too slack to remove the ad.I have run into this a few times.

You gotta roll with it as a vendor in these circumstances if you want to sell anything via free classifieds.
Usually the ones that want way below the asking price are either looking to resell it, trying to get a bigger/better/newer boat than their budget would otherwise allow, or could even be dealers.
The last boat I sold on gumtree I had about 12,000 page hits 150 phone calls, 20 promises to meet at the agreed time, 4 people that actually came to look and in the end just 1 buyer. That's all it takes to get it sold though, just one.
Assuming you've done your research and are at a similar market price for that type of offering, you just need to go through the process of filtering until you find your buyer.
Good luck and remember.......

From a buyer perspective
I found it way to hard to give away good money on gumtree for a decent boat.
Tried numerous times to simply view a boat only to be messed around. Made out by seller like I was expecting too much to go over a rig properly before handing over tens of thousands of dollars.....
Boats online or Boatsales all the way.

Same problem...
...trying to sell the GF's car on gumtree...most offers from that offshore rig in NZ! Ultimately coughed up the $45 or whatever it was to advertise on carsales and sold it to a legitimate buyer in less than a week.

Is it a scam
Is it a scam for a buyer to say they are buying for a mate in a remote location, agree to buy it at a discount price agreed to by both and then the mate rings you and says he has found a cheaper one,
and will you drop your price even more?
Had that twice now.

You get all sorts, e-mailing
You get all sorts, e-mailing you, texting you, messaging you through Gumtree and on the odd occasion ....they actually PHONE you and talk to you !!
I prefer the latter as they are (In my opinion) the genuine ones.
My pet hate are the ones that message you an offer without even asking any questions or looking at what your selling !
If someone does this to me then I pretty much ignore them as I know they are not a serious buyer.
Serious buyers phone up and ask questions that are relevant and to the point.

Best ad seen lately for a boat was someone in perth that was
sick of the B/S offers. Stated in their ad, 11K ono, then went on to say, if you want to offer 8K for the Boat, great you can have it, but the motor is an extra 3.5K.
I had a chuckle. Some complete morons on GT. brings out the worst of the worst, but it is easy to shift stuff you just want gone.
Price something at unders, and the masses with froth over it to grab a bargain. Certain races, it is in their nature to drive a hard bargain / barter. Its a cultural thing. I don't mind this, but out and out cheapskates can go back to curb crawling at bulk collections.
Don't get me started on bulk collections......oh my.

Something is only worth what
Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. What the seller wants and what the market decides is often a fair way apart.
Definitely a buyers market for toys at the moment but good rigs that are well priced sell quickly.
I have no problems making low offers and will usually throw them out before I go ahead and waste a sellers time with viewings, sea trials and all the rest.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Don't have a problem someone
Don't have a problem someone lowballing something I have advertised (unless I've advertised specifically) but if someone makes a lowball offer and I say "done" don't expect to come out and view, just come out with cash etc cos the deal is done !
the amount of idiots who lowball..... want to come out to "view" then make an even lower offer just wastes ppls time and pisses ppl off.
Edit: Dodgy wasn't having a go at you. :)

Thats my Worry
Thats my worry, if you give away 25% over the phone to somebody that has never seen it, they will surely pick a fault and want it cheaper on the spot.

When items are priced
When items are priced correctly they sell quickly, if it's over priced expect people to knock you down before they come around because it's only wasting their and your time if you won't move on price. Some people are dreamers on both sides of the buying fence it works both ways. I always find it easier to text questions myself as I work shift work

Just can't be assed with
Just can't be assed with lowball offers sight unseen.
If a buyer thinks it's over priced then say "I'm not prepared to pay more than..."
But not "give ya $4k for it..."
Not worth the paper it's written on
