I do most of mine myself, unless it is severely damaged which is very rare. I suggest you start off with the cheapest gear e.g 25 buck cheapies and then you won't worry.
cheers cos i got a tld 30 2 speed from my granddads cellar and it was mounted in dust and mould and i wanna take it apart n clean it all. still works good just has this gooey shit on it haha
i get oceanside to do mine, Honsu is very cluewy on reel servicing and does a grate job indeed. he sorts out the parts and not worth the hass buggering up a fishin trip with gear failure.
service all my own gear the high end as well there basic & if you ever need bearings go to a bearing shop cheep as & can order what ever quality you want at less than half the price & more sometimes
and a bit of greasing and oiling.
I would suggest that if you want to have a go yourself that you find a large, clear area where you can pull the reel apart. Get a bedroom sheet or some large sheets of paper to put everything on. Get some cue tips and some white spirit and start cleaning away dust, dirt and any built up grease and oil on the outside first.
If you decide to pull it apart, make note of where every bit comes from and make sure that you don't lose anything.
Once inside the reel, use a cue tip to clean off any dust, salt, sand, excess grease etc.
You should acquire proper Shimano reel grease and oil and you should be able to find the servicing points for a TLD on the web.
Do not overoil or grease.
If it needs more than a clean and regreasing, then get some expert help.
Do as Colin says but lay the bits down in the order they come out so when putting it back together you don't have to sit there scratching your head trying to work out where a bit goes. Same goes for cleaning the bits, one at a time then put it back in the spot from where you picked it from.

and a bit of greasing and oiling.
