Setting up fish finder on jet ski
Submitted by Glen.vit on Fri, 2011-03-18 07:29
Hey fellas
my mate and I recently purchased a lowrence hds5 combo and I'm just curious about who I could get to instal it and would the prop wash disturb the quality of the transducer.
Also because I dont go fishing off of it all the time, could the transducer, be taken off?
If anyone has installed a sounder on there ski and has information about the installation, please let me know.
Thanks

Check this out.
Easy install mate, just epoxy the transducer on a flat surface inside the hull... same as what we do on our kayaks.
Just make sure you use slow curing epoxy and follow directions, or you'll get air bubbles, and poor performance.
Otherwise use sikaflex 291 or sellys all clear....
Mounting the transducer inside the hull would be the best option for you, because you could easily damage an external transom mounted one, if your not careful.

Be careful
Be careful glueing the transducer inside the hull. Some hulls are not suitable. I would not recommend epoxy unless you are 100% sure its in the correct spot as you wont get it off afterwards. If you use sikaflex you could cut it off with knife if you had to.
Another thing about mounting it inside the ski is the hulls are different thicknesses and good luck findinding a flat spot. If you mount it on an angle then its not going to be showing whats below you but in actual fact it will show what is to the side of you which is a bit pointless. Most of the flat spots are too thick for the transducer to work effectively as well.. I mounted mine at the back and it hold perfect speed and perfect bottom contours at about 80km/hr which is pretty good. When I am not fishing it doesnt get in the way at all as I don't take my ski in water that is any less than about 500mm, even if you did though it would just fold out of the way.
PS - Dont run it off your normal battery, buy a motorcycle battery for about $20 and install that with an accessible charging plug.
