Setup Advice

Hi everyone, I'm a new fisherman and after chasing bream for awhile I want to go after some bigger fish like Snapper or Mulloway but I don't have a clue as to what sort of setup I need, So I was wondering what weight rating and size rod I would need and what sort of reels I should look at for this. Cheers

Land based or Boat?

where will you be fishing mostly, marina or Beach.

I assume landbased, so here goes.

any rod that can handle a 4 oz sinking and bait would be a good starting point. (lots of options available, from the cheaper penn up to the new Assassins, which are awesum rods)

9-10 foot rods are nice off the rocks, 12+ are good off the sand, (the extra lengh helps keep the line out of the breakers.)

Reels are budget dependant but any reel that will hold 300m of braid with 100m of topshot should surfice. Finnor and penn make good value for money reels. if you have the budget then look at a daiwa or shimano reel, or even a vanstaal.

drag : 7 to 10 kgs should do it

line : braid 30-40 lbs, mono 30 lbs, leader, 6-8 metres of 60lb.

take a trip down to one of our sponsors, a 1/2 hour chat will get you all the info you need and you can check out the bling while you are there.

anyway,my 2c worth.

Rod set up

Everything Psion said was spot on.

Your whole setup is budget dependant. Go into the shop with that fixed firmly in your mind and try not to be persuaded (to much) to go higher.

Personally i have a 10 foot Uglystick to use as a shore based rod. I do not do a lot of shore based fishing but the rod i have now is an upgrade for an Uglystick that lasted me 20 years. they are almost indestructable.

It's not the best beach rod around but it does the job and can pull a 6kg fish up a rock wall when fishing up north.

I would weight my cash a little more to the reel side as a good spinning reel can be put on a boat combo but a 10-12 foot rod only has 1 purpose.

Good luck with your new setup and let us know what you end up with..:)

Yeah well done Psion and Madmerv, good advice there. Only thing I would add would be buy the perfect outfit for what you will be doing most, Don't go general purpose. good luck
