I thought some people might find this an interesting thread? Tell us about your first fishing experience. Sorry if its been done before.
Mine was back in about 1968 when I was about 10. We lived opposite the WACA in East Perth with the Swan River just down the road. It was a great place to grow up with heaps to do but also plenty of places to get into trouble.
So where did I choose to fish? Queens Gardens next to the WACA! One night after dark a mate and I made a BIG mistake and decided to fish the ponds with a couple of handlines we had found. 15 minutes later we had a few massive Carp, Koi or whatever flapping on the bank (sorry I don't have pics). Then we were chased out of the gardens by the caretaker... I probably thought at the time that luckily I could run fast... problem was in those days everyone knew everyone... So, next thing the caretaker was banging on our front door... 5 minutes after that my old man gave me the flogging I so richly deserved.
With the memory lingering on my bum for ages I learnt my lesson and never fished Queens Gardens again. But I was hooked from that night on... (pun intended) and turned to the river for my fishing. It just wasn’t as easy as Queens Gardens.
Cheers

When I was 8 years old back
When I was 8 years old back in 2003, I had just moved to Australia. My dad, uncle myself and few other family members went to south mole. Managed to catch a herring on my very first cast. Had a while away from fishing for the next few years, but I still wanted to go back. Now im totally hooked, will head out for a fish anytime.

I still remember when I was
I still remember when I was about 5 or 6 years old going on holiday to Forster in NSW. Went fishing with my father and was there to just watch basically. He handed me the rod as he wanted to cut some some bait up when the float dissapeared. So I yelled out and reeled in my first ever fish. Don't ask me what it was as I can't remeber but I know it was cooked up for my dinner that night with a serve of mash lol. Funny how you rememebr these things, burned on my mind forever.Good memories.

First not sure
But I have fond memories of a beach house in Madora bay that my folks and family rented every summer holidays through the 80's and early ninetys that was an old fibro duplex across from the beach , and we used to be down there pretty much all day every day for two weeks pulling herring tailor whiting and the occasional ray or shovelnose would come past for a look pretty much right on the shore line . also remember the old man taking me to the the north and south moles for a fish but think he used to get annoyed at me loosing all his gear and then playing with the crabs.
Lost my old man a few years back now and those memories are still as strong. miss going fishing with him , but my little girl is 13 and loves a fish and my boy is 2 and a half with another due in 4 weeks, I may not be able to go fishing with my old man but will try my damdest to give my kids some similar memories for when im gone

number of trips out for gar
number of trips out for gar and tommies when I was a little tacker, recall pulling my rig in once to find an open swivel and rig gone. I said the fish had undone it (denying I left it undone) and dad asked "what did they undo it with their fish fingers"

herring
my first fish was off a little wooden jetty attached to the thomsons bay main jetty in rottnest some time in the 80's.
My dad was teaching me to cast and there was a tangle at the reel (my dad was never the best fisherman) as he was sorting that out i could feel a fish on the line so started winding which proabably caused more tangles. Up cam e a good sized herrin so I swung the rod around to bring it onto the jetty and the fish hit a pylon and spat the hook ending up back in the water. Good times

In 1957, I was 5 years old
In 1957, I was 5 years old living in Port Moresby in PNG. My fathers job was to run a boat out to pick up the passengers from the Catalina flying boats when they arrived from the Australian mainland. To be close to his work, we lived in a house on stilts in the harbor (?) .
The house was over the water and I had a knothole in my bedroom floor. Through the knothole I could see all of the fish (probably mullet) swimming about under the house. So loving my fishing, I naturally lowered a fishing line through the knothole and yep, caught a fish. Problem was it didnt fit through the knothole.
Not a happy ending for the fish . . . . . . thats my earliest memory of fishing and I've never forgotten it after my dad spoke very patiently to me about what I should and should not do !!

Donnelly River
First intro to fishing came on a trip down to the mouth of the Donnelly river with Uncle and Aunty from Pemberton. Was about 10 and living in Northam at the time.
Big hand line, half a pound sinker, 2 x 3.0 hooks and a bit of dowelling about 2 metres up the line as a finger grip when you started to wind up speed to throw it out.
Got a few herring then got a hook through little finger. Pliers wouldn't cut it so had to use a file to cut through the shank. Wash it off in sea water then back in to it.
Moved to Bunbury in 63 band was a jetty rat, wag school along with a mate from Marist Bros and head down to get our handlines and knife hidden under the jetty and using mussels for bait to catch skippy, tailor and herring, giving our catch away to who ever was down there. Got to know all the spots under the jetty and where to catch what species

The wagging school bit
The wagging school bit reminded me how we would catch the number 82 bus from East Perth to Perth Modern High School... trouble is the 82 also continued on to City Beach!!!! Thats where I would sometimes get off to go fishing

Busselton jetty around 1990
Busselton jetty around 1990 with the family. My old mans friend lent him some gear to take me and my brother fishing. We caught a bunch of herring and a good sized leather jacket. From then on we were riding our biked down to the beach for a fish whenever we had time.
Also easter holidays on rotto as kids, bunch of families went and each night we would fry up the herring and salmon we all caught. Great memories.

Mid 60s
Would have been about 5yrs old, whinged like shit to get my brother to take me fishing of the rocks at the beach. I caught 2 fish (no idea what) then managed to get my hook firmly embedded in his arse. The old man had to take him to hospital to get the hook removed and he was getting injections in his bum for a few weeks after that. Was a while before he took me again. Good times, we'll for me anyway.
This habit is getting expensive!

would probably be during the mid 70' when the family would go up to Shark Bay for the school holidays going out with my father, older brother and Uncle to one of the many coral spots every drop resulted in a big snapper and the lines that we had on the handlines remind me of the cord I now use on my whipper snipper how fishing lines have changed since then had some great holidays up there as it was a place not visited by many so was a very small community where everyone knew each other that definately got me hooked in to fishing and 30 years later I am still fishing with my older brother and now with my son but alas not with my Dad as he passed

Catching catfish from the
Catching catfish from the Derby jetty, catching cheribin with the old man, camping at various spots along the Fitzroy River in the early '80's. Can't remember which one was first, but I've got a photo of me holding a fishing rod camping on the May River in the Kimberley's when I was 2, so that was probably the first attempt at the sport!

Mine was catching Mullet at our small little SA town`s Outlet... The sea would reach the lakes on high tide and the fish would follow... There was always an old duck that was down there using maggots killing the pig, we would do ok but always eventually sneak closer n closer to her ( because you always feel its your spot that's letting you down )... Or drifting in Dads boat in the bay catching Flathead but the fishing was always pretty slow so I remember assisting in lengthening the anchor rope to help us find more fish but the old knot tying skills weren't so good then so yup we lost that anchor and that was us done for the day...

my first fishing experience
my first fishing experience was when I was 4, my parents took me and my brother and sister to a small rocky river somewhere north west of Townsville in queensland catching sooty grunter, perch and some sort of bream. had a great time getting help to pull in small sootys. the thing that sticks in my mind the most about that trip was the amount of thistles growing along the rocky river bank and the lack of footwear us kids had. I can remember sitting on a rock because I had so many spikes in my feet that I could not walk any more.
