If it is near the beach I might head down with a camera.

Or maybe pedal out on the Hobie for a closer look? hahahaahaha.

Did you hear it on ABC radio Colin?

Hi guys

Tue, 2009-10-13 11:50

I am not sure exactly how far off the coast it was. The ABC morning guy was talking to a camerman from a local TV station who was filming the shark eating the whale. I do know that they closed down Floreat and the Dog Beach to swimmers.

Differing reports suggest the whale carcass may be 50 m

Tue, 2009-10-13 12:15

or 100 m offshore.

Maybe its a really big

Tue, 2009-10-13 14:04

Maybe its a really big whale, and its both :p

Probably just estimates on the distance out, and its probably bobbing around a bit with the waves. 50 or 100m, either way its castable with the right rod Wink

Might have trouble

Tue, 2009-10-13 17:15

Might have trouble convincing my livie to swim out. Would proabably be easier to use some sort of fish but I think the sharks would prefer something with limbs.

Just went down & had a look.

Tue, 2009-10-13 13:12

Just went down & had a look. It's off the dog beach. You can see some blubber floating surrounded by an almighty whale-oil slick. The Herring must be going crazy!! ;-)

Helicopter was still circling, but no shark in sight. Camera crew on the beach reckoned they didn't get any footage, but another crew apparently got some footage earlier this morning. Check out the news tonight I guess.

SHARKS FEAST ON WHALE OFF FLOREAT

shark attacks whale carcass

DINING OUT: A shark feasts on a whale carcass about 100m off Floreat Beach. Picture: Kerris Berrington

TWO large sharks, believed to be great whites, have been feasting on part of a whale carcass about 100m off Floreat Beach today.

Water Police said there were two sharks about 3m-4m in size but they had left the area with fat bellies.

A spokesman said there was little of the whale carcass left and their patrol boat was heading back to shore.

Surf Life Saving WA beach services coordinator Matt Du Plessis said a crowd of 50-100 beachgoers watched in awe as the sharks fed off the dead whale carcass, which had been torn in two, off Perth's Floreat Beach.

He said the two sections of dismembered whale carcass had been drifting 100-200m offshore along the coast and were headed towards Scarborough Beach.

Floreat Beach and the dog beach between Floreat and Scarborough have been closed and Scarborough Beach will close if the carcass washes closer towards the area.

“A member of the public informed us they had sighted a shark feeding off part of the whale carcass,” Mr Du Plessis said.

“We closed off both Floreat beach and the dog beach.”

“We got the public out of the water.”

Mr Du Plessis said the shark was large but its species was unknown.

However great white sharks commonly attack young whales, and have been seen devouring rotting carcasses along WA's coast many times before.

He said he was monitoring the situation with the Department of Fisheries and Water Police, but urged beachgoers to keep an eye out.

“If you see any parts of the carcass, at any beach, definitely get a hold of the Water Police straight away and stay away from the water,” he said.

The Water Police can be contacted on 9442 8600.

few dead ones?

Tue, 2009-10-13 13:46

Seems to be a few dead whales coming through of late.  That must be about three in the last 6-8 months?

Some post-feeding-frenzy pix

Tue, 2009-10-13 14:24

Some pix of the camera-frenzy sparked by the feeding-frenzy. By this stage the sharks would have already "left the area with fat bellies".

I reckon the lifesavers are pretty brave to get that close to the carcass though.
