Shark fishing

Are there any good places to go fishing for sharks on the Perth coast. Close to woodmans point jetty?

Keen for any sharks

Love the diversity

I love the diversity you get in this sport (word used loosly unless you go sharks or sambo's).

This post wont help you Bobbo as i'm one of the many fisho's who dread a noah getting onto my line.

When i read your post my first thought was WTF would you want to fish for sharks for. That is just my bias, and the guys i fish with, because we are targeting different species and the time spent battling a noah is time our lines are not dangling in the strike zone for what we really want. I pretty quickly realized that for you, and many other fisho's out there, the time spent pitting yourself against a powerful shark is what makes fishing fun.

The same can be said for a stack of other species that get targetted by fisho's up and down the coast where one mans annoying bycatch is anothers target. Sharks, sambo's, salmon, sailfish (if you want mackies), etc.

I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction and good luck with you fishing. Try to catch the ones that were destined to get on the end of my line just as i'm drifting over that snapper hole.. Lol

As long as the wind is to my back so I can send balloons out, I've had pretty good success.

I've had success down Warnbro sound beach when its an easterly and Point peron when its a southernly to name a few.

Theres plenty out there - its just a matter of getting a bait in the water, burleying up, and waiting.

I don't know anything about Warnbro Sound but can attest to the other 2 places being good bets

I geuss the bycatch is a spanish mac, sounds like a pretty good deal!

Only if you're ballooning

Only if you're ballooning really? I didn't think they were interested in dead looking stuff on the bottom but I don't have first hand experience with a mackerel so happy to be corrected.

Better get in quick, sounds like they are going to ban the deliberate catching of sharks by the trophy hunters.

Burleying is the problem.

You are really not seen as being particuarly civic-mided when you are burleying the crap out of a beach to attract the things which have been showing an increased propensity towards eating us lately. That's my only objection--I did arc up last year when some blokes posted pics of some very large sharks they appeared to have caught off Winderabandi Point--we are specifically asked to not dump fish frames in the bay, which we don't, then someone goes and burleys up? FFS, I mad sure Phil knew about it. But they were probably gone before he found out.

There was a very recent incident in Kalbarri, no names, where a shark did a bit of catch and release of it's own--young bloke deliberately caught a whaler off the beach at Red Bluff-rolling it back into the water, surge caught it and bumped into his ankle, and promptly fastened on. Quite nasty, saw the pic, but I couldn't help laughing,  to be honest-go looking for bitey's, get bitten...

Shark hung on , wouldn't let go, surge dragging both of them into surf.

Realistically though, burleying isn't chumming. There's no blood in it and no other scents strong enough to bring in things that aren't already there. Unless you're referring to chumming, which is illegal in the metro.

So how do they draw the distinction?

Sat, 2018-03-31 06:05

just interesting how they draw the distinction between the two, is it just volume-based, or contents, or both?

Hey Ranmar

We were up at Winderabandi when those blokes got those big sharks. They may have been burleying at night but they definitely weren't doing it during the day. With the southerlies blowing you couldn't of missed a slick. They did paddle out big baits though.

I do a bit of shark fishing

Sun, 2018-04-01 09:50

I do a bit of shark fishing and so do a few mates. I prefer to catch sharks I can eat and give away to friends and family but still get the odd big one I have to release. They are everywhere.

Shark fishing has been copping a lot of negative attention lately but as usual its a select few giving the whole lot a bad name. Most of the stuff in the media has been by 15 - 18 year old kids.
