Shark Mackeral

Headed out from Hillaries yesterday with a fellow FW member and trolled up this little Shark Mack just behind the 3 mile. Decided to keep it as I've never tried eating one before and couldnt find any info on their eating quality, so bleed and put into the ice slurry.  Filleted up nicely and crumbed and cooked tonight for dinner and although the meat looks sweet and white, it tastes like shite. Very floury in texture and still had that ammonia taste to it.  Happy to say Shark Mackies are now a catch and release species.

Caught on a Richter Jnr Tornado

Cheers again to Alwaysfishin for the day out and the happy snap.

That's interesting as we've caught countless numbers over the years and they've always come up fine. I'm on the north east coast but.

Yeah mate, there was a bit hence using the skirted lures rather than the Laser Pros. Lots of bonito around but didn't find any other tuna.

Last time i ate one was when we had 9 people to feed on a camping trip. My friend done it up in a stir fry and I was horrible so I gave the left overs to the dogs and they wouldn't eat it

Very nice to eat

Wed, 2013-02-13 14:42

We brought about 30kg of fillets back from up north. Found the eating quality excellent. Maybe you need to give it time to bleed out before putting in the ice slurry. We would bleed them and place in rock pool for a while before filleting. Could smell the ammonia when filletting but OK when eating.

I save all the flesh for chum and leave the skin with about 10mm of flesh on for bait. Nice and oily and stays on the hook well.

Bait fish

Good for bait and not much else.

If you are extremely hard up for fish I would suggest eating buff bream or sea sweep before eating one.

Shark Mack

"They are considered average eating.  The flesh has a strong smell of ammonia, hence 'shark' mackerel."  from http://fishwrecked.com/content/fishwreckapedia
