Had a very similar experience

Fri, 2011-03-11 13:09

Had a very similar experience with Daiwa. Rang them up, spoke to a friendly guy and said my star wheels thread had stripped off and was surprised after explaining the situation that the guy just asked me for my address. Was a bit baffled at first, but good way to do it. No cost at all and he didnt even ask how old the reel was. I even mentioned that I'd installed carbontex and he said no problems. Also chucked in some spacers for some spinning reel I needed too

I've heard with some companies it can vary a huge amount depending on whos there at the time. I think Daiwa used to be really bad for that kind of stuff when the previous person was running it. Not sure if the same guy is still there or whether things have changed since (was over a year ago). For stuff like reels where I'd have quite a few, its good to know if the company has good customer service.

Agreed. I had a problem with a stradic that in the end was probably my fault.. The side plate cracked around the handle. It was replaced and without asking so was the rotor and the bail arm and serviced as well.

Cheers

Had a similar thing with a sticky drag on my Stella 8000SW, no receipt and Shimano replaced the drag and gave it a service.

Even with no receipt?

Mon, 2011-03-14 22:53

Wow that's pretty good. Would have thought they would demand a receipt to prove it wasn't an import.

It was painful purchasing a couple stellas recently knowing I could have gotten them for hundreds of $$$ cheaper from overseas, but as I had previously had to send my sw20k for repairs I figured it would be worthwhile in the long run.

Now if only we had the sw6000hg, our domestic 5000sw just lacks a bit of capacity....

Sat, 2011-03-12 17:26

and i would expect top service when you buy top qaulity reel.....good service is the difference these days between hacks looking to make a quick buck and those looking to established and consolidate market share for the long haul

reputation goes a llllllllllloooongggg way these days.........good on them

there is a local lad whos got a bad rep for poor service.....wont say his name but ive heard he aint particularly 'motivted' to get off his backside,,,,,wonder if hes still around after he didnt help a mate with a broken mid section rod....mate had to go direct east to sort it out which was done in a timely manner... wasnt shimano though

Nelly id buy a stella over the salty any day.........the stella is like a hsv the salty is like a standard commy 5.0 ltr based on recent build qaulity reports.......both good reels but one is definatly a better built reel atm...i have no preference for either really

Not sure if there really is

Sat, 2011-03-12 18:00

Not sure if there really is much of a difference in build quality between the HSV and standard commy. Just extra 'bits'. Though the idea still works (no idea which are the best example cars :p).

Also had a service from daiwa where i had the line at the top of the spool, so sent it in to a tackleshop. Waited ages to get it back and it turned out they'd replaced the bail arm which was supposedly bent (not cheap) and it still didnt fix the issue! Turned out it was missing some spacers, and when I rang daiwa direct they sent them over free.

Was told once that you should deal direct with them if you can, because when it goes through a retailer they dont care as much (at least in terms of timely turnaround).

What you have been told is crap.

Sat, 2011-03-12 18:43

If you have to sent a reel to diawa and you go to the right tackle shop you will get it back faster than if you send it yourself.I will say that diawa does drag its feet with the servicing and repair department though. No amount of calls from my local bluewater store was going to get my reel back any faster and they have much much more pull than anyone else around due to shear purchase power. The only issue i have seen with the stellas is dropping or bending rotors so i would say they wont carry a few spares in stock.the things that go wrong with diawa is more abuse related so the parts that need fixing will vary from reel to reel and if you need a part they dont have they need to come for overseas and you there for add another element that is not controlled by diawa australia.I havent had an issue with any off my saltigas or stellas that i was not indirectly responsable for.Be abuse of bearings or just plain going to hard on them and both companies have been fine  to deal with.Long and short of it is the retailer has nothing to do with the turnaround it will come down to what your reel requires at the time and if it is in stock. If i was diawa or shimano and i had every Tom Dick and Harry calling i would be pissed and you would be filed in the get to it when the people that pay my wages had their reels sorted. That being the retailers.

Yeah i dunno its all

Sat, 2011-03-12 17:48

Yeah i dunno its all personal opinion....I have an older gen saltiga and a new saltiga which i cannot fault...Also have a stella 5000sw(bail arm gives me shits....) nice reel but i still rate the saltigas above it.Don't read into someone elses opinions of reels unless you have used them yourself.I wouldn't be reading too much into alan tani's reviews......Daiwa Is still alteast on par with there new salitgas...As for service have had very good service from daiwa and from shimano so no complaints there..

Bail Arm

What is the problem you have with the bail arm on the stella 5000sw?

Sat, 2011-03-12 19:38

I use the 5000sw alot for throwing poppers over reefy areas.Alot of the time i will lock the bail over when the line is say 5m off the water to take up tension so i can start cranking as soon as it hits the water,so the popper doesn't sink and snag up.The problem is the line generally goes to the opposite side of the bail away from the line roller.Normally if you start cranking with most other reels it will run back to line roller but say 3 times out of 10 it will just stay there and i have to manual push it into the line roller.
