shimano catana

hey guys,

im looking for a heavy spinning rod and am looking inparticular at the catana.

im looking at the 10 foot surf but is says they only come in OH would it really matter if i used it with a TL?

here is the link

the 10 foot OH has a heavier line and lure rating which is more what im after.

i know the spine will be on the opposite side but will that really matter??

cheers russ

Hey Russ, The Catana Spin's

Hey Russ,

The Catana Spin's have been discontinued, much to my disgust.

I use a 12' spin and the 10' OH both with spheros' and they both work fine.

I only use them off the rocks where i dont need to cast far at all though, if you wanted to retain good distance then you'd need to go for the spin.

Awesome rods, stiff as all hell, a real broomstick.

Yes the spine's position

Yes the spine's position does matter. Especially a rod of that calibre. Rods are built to bend more so one side than the other. If its used on the opposite, you'll find its stiffer and it will fold....SNAP!!

Where the spine should be is

Wed, 2010-07-21 13:18

Where the spine should be is up for discussion, here is one rod builder's recommendations;

Type of Rod                        Effective Spine

boat & troll (oh)                   Top
SW spin                              Top
SW fly                                Top
fw spin                               Underneath
fw fly                                 Underneath
baitcast                              Top

That said, you might be kidding yourself to think that a cheap rod like a catana is built on the spine, its amazing that they're even built for the very low prices they command.

yeah i can pick one up for

Wed, 2010-07-21 13:50

yeah i can pick one up for 100 bucks, so i think i will still give it a go.

i dont really care if it breaks as long as its when im casting not fighting a fishCool

casting distance shouldnt be a problem brody as i will be using big artificials 90 gram plus, with a spheros 12000 and 15 kilo braid

cheers russ
