Shopping - Asia Cruise - Info/Assistance Sought?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sat, 2009-12-12 08:01
Gang,
Sandra (my wife for those that don't already know) and I are off on a 16 day cruise aboard the P&O Pacific Sun next year and would greatly appreciate some input in good shopping information.
Amongst the places we'll be calling in are:
* Christmas Island
* Semerang - Indonesia
* Padang Bay - Bali ***corrected***
* Lombok
* Komodo
Any advice on shopping (probably from the above Kutta near Benoa) would be greatly appreciated. Especially CDs/DVDs, clothing etc.
Fee free to PM me if required.
Cheers in advance!

Good work Colin - saw you down at the Court House the other day and after seeing some of the respectable citizens you had to deal with I could imagine that a well deserved holidays would be easily earnt...
We went to Lombok a few years back (just a few months after the Bali Bombings) and we were pretty much the only westerners on the island. Compared to Bali it had a lot more cultural type bits and pieces but I hear that it is getting more into the DVD's and clothing sides now. But I think Benoa would be your best bet as it is pretty close to all the main Bali tourist areas.
Its definately worth doing research especially for trips like this.
Good luck with it.

Isnt Benoa just the harbour on the
South Eastern side of Bali, if so, its about a 20 min taxi to kuta/legiaan. If shopping you can pretty much start at the Kuta end of Jalan Legian and head north, its shops and resteraunts and bars for miles.
I think we left from Benoa to head over the Lembonggan Island which was well worth a look compared to Bali. Bali is all lush green forrest and rice field, Lembonggan is about a 45 min boatride (depends on the boat you pick) and is totally different, its bloody hot and dry, so hot the staple agriculture is corn and the Islands main industry is kelp farming for cosmetics.
On bali the Ubud region is good for alot of the craftwork, silversmithing, timber carving, Batik Art/Cloth. I really enjoyed learning about theway they make the batik art.
Be careful with the silversmiths, they were the worst to bargain with. My friend had about 5 pieces he wanted to buy, negotiated a price and was about to pay when the store owner came over and refused to honor the prices/sale and wanted to renegotiate the whole thing over.

I've been to Bali a few times by air myself, Sandra hasn't. Note the change in port for Bali - the wedsite had us calling in at (Tanjung) Benoa, down south, but the hard copy booklet and tour reservations sheets has us calling in at Padang Bay on the mid east coast. I've emailed P&O for clarification. Yes, the batik process is interesting to watch isn't it. Cheers for the tips on silversmiths.
As far as hawkers go, I love bartering but had an experience with a few Javanese where one pulled a knife - fortunately the other hawkers 'sorted him out' ;).

Vocabulary
Colin, I have an indonesian language book/cd that I can lend you if you are interested. I know you probably dont need to be fluent in Bahasa but personally I find getting along with the locals far more entertaining/enjoyable if you have a few words to share in their language.
Absolutle essentials:
Tidak! = No!
Belo Kanaan = Right please
Belo Kuri = Left please
Termia Kasih = Thankyou
The whole system of geeting/saying hello is similar to German where it is based on morning or evening so there is, Salama Malat - Morning, Salama Malam - Evening.
Dua bier Bintang Terima Kahsi!@ = Two bintangs thanks!
My spellings not so good, but its the pronunciation and I might have my mornings/evenings mixed up.

You had to bring up the food didnt you alfred!? I can smell the babi gulang now.
Also, we didnt find it in Bali, but in Jakarta they have a snack dish called Martabak(sp?)
It is like a dough with minced meat, mushrooms, shallots, other things folded over and fried. Sorta looks like a zuccini slice cut into squares, but they sell it with about three types of sauces, a red sambal, a non spicy sweet number and my favorite is soy sauce with whole green birds eye chillis and shallots. You pick up a square and dip it into the sauces.
On Jalan Legian in Bali there are two awesomeseafood resteraunts in kuta where you can pick your catch from the ice box out the front, but I hear Jimbaran Bay is where you can select them from the boats as they come in and have them cooked in a private bungalow on the beach.
Nasi Goreng = Fried Rice
Mee Goreng = Fried noodles
Do not come home without trying as many varieties of the above as possible.
Damn im hungry:/
