Shore Catch Post 1 - Bait & Burley

After being a “story writer” for a couple of years on FW, setting up a new business (fishing and scientific consulting) and sponsoring this excellent site, it was probably time that I used our business identity to post relevant commercial things.  Adam allowed me to set up the Shore Catch profile and this is Post 1.  I will still post my fishing stories, and make non-commercial comments, as Mick C however.

After a couple of months at the shop, it has been awesome to meet and talk to a lot of FW Members – we really appreciate the effort of those that have come in.  We are still working hard to finish our showroom display and finalise our range and really want that all to be done before actively promoting our brand and products through the numerous mediums available.  We certainly plan to have a FW Members opening with a BBQ and beers when it is all done.  The input from FW Members, pretty much on a daily basis, has been much appreciated.

A general theme that comes through time and time again is bait quality.  It has always been an issue for me and is one of the reasons we invested in WA Fisheries and town planning approvals to allow fish processing at our premises.  After a lot of consideration and feedback we have finally settled on our retail bait range, and this can be viewed at http://www.shorecatch.com.au/shore-catch-bait.html.  We are stocked up and most things we package ourselves, unless stated, so that we can try and guarantee quality.  Please have a look and we would welcome any feedback on what has been selected, bearing in mind that some things are seasonal or subject to fishing closures (i.e. Californian squid).

A number of Members have requested bulk baits for trips away.  It has been good dealing with people and working with them to ensure the bait packages suit their needs.  We have the permits and equipment to allow us to process fish products to produce the bait packages that people want.  I particularly liked Lamby’s request for squid and mullet that could be taken out to catch the fresh bait, one packet per day for 2 boats over 5 days, on the annual trip North.  In the end we settled on 10 x 2kg mixed bags with 1kg squid and 1kg mullet fillets per bag which I could vacuum pack flat to minimise transport space (see image).  I believe this is a valuable service that we should continue to provide?

The development of our fish based burley products is continuing.  The “shred-a-thon” is tomorrow (as per the post - http://fishwrecked.com/forum/fw-members-free-fish-frame-shredding-day-10am-630pm-friday-6-may-wangara).  There has been a good response and I’m sure Members will be happy with the shred that is “retrieved” from their fish waste.  The fish shred is the essential ingredient in burley (or just used raw) and you are more than welcome to come along, even if it is to just have a look at the “beast” in action.  I have plenty of frames to process so will be happy to show you how it works.  This use is so much better than putting the fish waste in landfill.

The feedback on the burley we make has been very encouraging.  There is no doubt that the product attracts fish, and I particularly like the shore based stories from repeat customers about how the bait fish have been attracted and the predators have been caught.  I have tested the burley products a lot over the last couple of months, from a few boats, and am very happy with performance.  We will look to distribute our fish based burley products to a geographic spread of limited Perth tackle shops over the next few months, particularly the FW Sponsors.

The ”FW Journey” so far has been a good one, and Shore Catch hopes to provide selected products and services that Members want in the future.  Thanks for your feedback and support.  Mick

The shredder is a great idea!  Good to see it in action.

Had a quick look through tbe store and have already identified my next purchase.  A  canvas 4 knife holder to replace the pvc tube i currently used that doesnt protect tbe cutting edge or prevent rusting!

Nice to meet Mick and a couple of the other FWers.

It was great to see some

Fri, 2016-05-06 20:49

It was great to see some long lost frames turn into something so useful.  I now have twice as much room in my freezer for more frames.

So funny talking to people you feel you know so well  but are meeting for the first time. The community  of fishwrecked!!.

Top stuff Mick for allowing access to such a machine. Sure beats the chipper i was eyeing off at tje garden festival.

Shredder Use Cost Model?

Fri, 2016-05-06 22:26

From the Shredder "Invitation" Post.

Would have done more than 200kg today.  Awesome to meet quite a few FW Members, and the Shredder is an absolute beast.

A medium frozen whole salmon was brought in and I timed how long it took to process to shred under ideal conditions.  142 seconds from start to finish.  Any small fish are processed pretty much as fast as you can throw them in the chute.  0.5kg to 5kg+ per minute seems to be the rate, depending on the size of the fish and the frozen shape.

The finished product is "quality".  I think it will be a service that we offer in the future on a regular day each week, fortnight or month (depending on demand).  The cost model is probably a $20 hire fee and $20 per half hour block?  You can process a lot of fish in this time so you would want to build up your frozen frames and do minimum 10kg batches.  I would be interested in Member's views on this.  Cheers.  Mick

Another Cost Use Model?

Thinking a bit more about this, a booking model might work well.  Express interest, and we will communicate with you so the shredding events are 100kg+ in total.  We could run the events based on demand, and the hire cost may be reduced.  Thoughts?

Shredder

Sat, 2016-05-07 07:14

Both models have their pro's and con's.

A regular day/time would be great so those with a busy life can organize their time in advance, get there and get the job done. Down side is the cost if you dont have a lot to do. Some people dont have a lot of freezer space to collect frames in. They could always wait for other members to turn up and join their block of time to reduce costs but if you have only limited time then this might not suit.

A booking model would be great with those who have a more flexible time schedule. The onus is then on you, Mick, to try and get a group of 5-10 people together on the same day and that can be like trying to heard a pack of cats.

Have you thought about a direct swap model where members drop off 10kg of fish and just pick up 3-4kg of burley/shread (you need to work out a cost model for that). You then have the raw product to process at you convienence and dont have an extra day the shredder needs to be cleaned. That is providing you have the freezer space..

Cheers Mick.To be able to

Cheers Mick.

To be able to communicate with shorecatch / Mick via PM's etc. being located away from metro in the SW has been invaluable. With all the positive feedback on here & a custom order in mind which was evolving constantly, Mick has been quite simply awesome in accommodating us.

So many trips away have seen bulk bait purchases in large packs which works in theory but given you want quality fresh bait you do start to lose a lot over the course of the trip to spoiling etc. & wasted $. From our past experiences we knew what we needed, shorecatch has the quality of product (from member reviews) & Mick whom has gone above & beyond to deliver the custom package.

Been a pleasure to deal with.

Cheers,

Lamby
