Shore Catch Post 2 - Fish Processing
The last while has seen the fish processing side of our new business starting to develop in earnest. The “packaged bulk bait for trips away to user specification” is seeming to be a popular product and it is nice to be able to offer the service. I have met a number of FW Members through the process and it has been a good experience.
It has been interesting times dealing with the regulations around fish processing, particularly the shredding of frames. The general rule is that recreationally caught fish cannot be used where the product is used for a commercial purpose (you can’t sell, trade, barter, etc any product from a recreationally caught species) and I completely agree with this. All the fish shred that we produce has to be commercially obtained from licenced fishermen or fish processors and this is fine, and required.
There is clearly a demand for people to use our shredder to process their recreationally caught frames. The way I read this is that we would be providing a “service” rather than “using a recreationally caught fish in a commercial product” (you would have to take your shred and we could not buy or exchange it). I have sought a ruling on whether we can charge for the service which we should receive shortly.
We have had an enquiry from a Member for processing a lot of frames this Saturday. We haven’t been opening on Saturday yet but every time I am at work on a Saturday, people come and want to buy things. We will open this Saturday (8.30am – 3pm) and will be happy to shred Members frames (let me know if you want to participate if possible). We have quite a few products to make on the day so there will be a bit of activity going on and you are welcome to come down. 65 Buckingham Drive Wangara.
You may have noticed that a few of our products are being stocked by a very limited number of retail outlets. We are just seeking to evaluate the required products and processes to wholesale our goods. There seems to be reasonable acceptance but I guess time will tell as to whether we distribute to a wider area. I do rate the products, via quite a bit of testing, and encourage you to give them a try.
I really appreciate the continued support of FW Members and look forward to meeting more of you in time. Mick

Interesting regarding the
Interesting regarding the processing of frames, as I fully understand the implications of processing then onselling rec caught frames.
However I cant see the problem with providing a service to grind it up and give it back to the owner.
Past experience with any government department is that when they are asked a curly question, the answer is "no".
If this is the case, Id be very interested to know.
At the end of the day there wouldnt seem any difference between paying to grind it up or paying for the service of the council to take away the very same fish frames for landfill...

Licence Amendment
Rob,
In the end, I think we will have to amend our licence to make conditions certain. Use the recreational fish waste rather than bury it in the ground is the reason why it is acceptable, in my opinion.

.
I think you may have misunderstood me, I meant paying to grind it up and use it (not sell it), or paying to grind it up and bury it in landfill shouldnt make any difference to Fisheries.
But they have a habit of making the simple into a saga.
Hopefully not in this case...

I churned up my frames and a whole salmon on your trial day for free and you have a dedicated customer going forward.
No way I am going to buy, use and clean a crappy grinder that will take me forever when I can pop down to you to get perfect size chunks of fish.

Its a great service mick and i hope common sense prevails. The problem with common sense is that its not that common!
If it comes down to charging a fee to process a rec caught fish is agaunst the law, then i'll report the City of Swan to Fisheries because they charge me rates to take my rubbish away that in the past has had fish frames in it.
Fish! HARD!

It doesn't matter anyway Mick
It doesn't matter anyway Mick because all you are doing is letting people use your shredder for free because you are so passionate about fishing and asking them to contribute towards the 'cleaning and 'maintenance' cost based on usage.

Interesting points being raised, if fisheries dropped into a private residence and weighed fillets and frames processed or otherwise would they not be counted as part of your procession limit? I would like to think common sense prevailed but as someone has pointed out its no so common today

Frames do not count towards possession limits. Fisheries encourage you to keep them........and give to them for research

The way I see it is you are
The way I see it is you are mearly charging the public to use a shredding machine.
They are paying for the use of a machine which includes wear and tear, cleaning, maintenance and general running costs of this machine and whatever they decide to put through it is entirely up to you and the customer.
The shredder could be used to shred paper, recycle plastics or as most choose ....fish frames, scraps or whole fish.
If what a customer brings to your store is legally aquired and just wants to use your services then how can there be any confusion ?
