Skeptical on bottom meats!?!?
Had a pretty good experience this morning that I thought I should share.
I was pretty skeptical about the vexed bottom meats when they first came out, but after a bit of time I figured I'd get some to give them a try. Usef them for the first time today. Found a nice little lump with heaps of fish showing on the sounder. Drifted over it a few times with baits for some undersized snapper. Had caught a small Sargent baker so put it down whole on the bottom meat about 4m off the bottom. Put the rod in the holder and went about getting the other rod down. Turned around and saw the bottom meat rod doubled over on what looked like a snag, then saw a bit of a kick which got me a bit more interested.
Picked up the rod and it was pretty clear it was a solid fish. After a good number of solid surges back to the bottom I knew I had a pretty decent dhuie and was expecting something about 15kg. Went a bit easier on it once it was off the bottom just to be sure nothing pulled out or broke. Eventually got it to the surface and when it broke the surface I couldn't believe the size of it. Reefed it on board and then let out several expletives. Put it on the scales and it bottomed out 22kg scales. Went 105cm but was an absolute barrel of a fish.
For those interested was caught out of Mindare in the 50's.
I'm thinking there might be something about these bottom meats. Anyone else had success with them?

I'd heard very good things
I'd heard very good things about them regarding Dhu's so thought I'd take a couple of 300gm models up to Gnarloo to try out. Dropped one baited with Squid in 100m. Within literally minutes it went off and a cracking Goldband. Dropped it down again and off again to something bigger, well true to my luck the grey coats like em too :(
Looking forward to trying them out down here when I can get out.
Awesome catch btw mate

In my opinion it's an expensive way to bait fish and someone is making decent money from it. They are advertised well targeting people who want to cross over to jigging from bait fishing. In saying that I agree that's an excellent fish no matter what you caught it on.

Took 2 to Coral bay.
Both got taxed 1st time I dropped them.
And we weren't being hit by sharks before that.
Maybe better for Dhu's

Same thing trying to use
Same thing trying to use running ball sinker rigs up that way, doesn't drop fast enough and the grey coats eat em on the way down, would hurt a bit more losing a bottom meat though

I do the same with Big Johns
I do the same with Big Johns jigs when the fish are a little more timid, add a strip of fresh caught bait fish. The bottom meats really are just an expensive bait rig.

Awesome fish...the big fresh
Awesome fish...the big fresh bait irresistible for the big Dhues.
Basically a drift bait rig which is well proven with good fresh presented squid or fillets.
I'm happy to keep using the 5/0 bean sinkers atm.

My fave rig. I was fishing with a bottom meat and had a drift bait out and got outfished by the $5 driftbait hands down.

Thanks guys.
Agree with what everyone has said. All about getting the right bait presented in front of the fish. If the bottom meat does it then great, but there are other ways to do the same thing. I'm just happy to have cracked the metre!
