Small boat outwide report
Submitted by Rig on Fri, 2011-12-30 12:52
I made use of yesterday's fantastic conditions to get out of Ocean reef and onto Direction Bank to try a couple of spots. I stumbled across a ledge that provided us with this feed and a couple of unstoppables, great day in my 4.75m quintrex and tested out my new BB outfit. I was a bit surprised there weren't more boats out.

Nice work. Ive got the same boat Quinie 475, millenium hull, and really rate it for a small boat. Was wondering how you find yours and if you are happy with it.

millenium
Hi Gav,
Mine is a 1995 hull so not a millenium, I find my boat very comfortable to fish out of but being a small ali you do get tossed aroud in rough conditions.
I recently added a much higher canopy to mine so I can stand behind the wheel and raised the seats up, it gives a much better viewing angle.
with the water temps increasing your boat will definately be able to get out and amognst it trawling for mackies I got a few last year. if the wind is a bit strong trawling along it doesnt seem so bad. I had a shot yesterday as the water temp around the 3 mile was 23deg, out further it was 21 deg(too cold) but there was so much surface weed around the place I gave up.
not alot of cray pots around either

Good to hear. This is my first year with the boat so we are still getting to know each other. Recently came back from Exmouth with it and had a ball trolling for mackies, hence my attached photo. Took the boat out to the Muriens and was a dream to drive. Has a 2 stroke yamy 50 on it and after a full day of trolling at north murion and back used about 1/2 a tank. Seems to be a stable dry hull and am tip toeing toward a rotto and direction bank trip. Judging by what you said if i pick the right day shouldt be a problem.

we had a 5m trailcraft awesome boat
I agree with the comments above about heading out wide- i saw heaps of 4-4.5m tiller steer dinghies around five fathom yesterday
Pick your conditions and you can go pretty much anywhere

On flat water its a dream. My concern is being at the back of Rotto when the wind change comes in. How do you recon it would go if I left on the change which turns into the usual 20kn sou wester heading back to Woodman's.

idk if you were posing this
idk if you were posing this question at me but ill answer it anyway!
your boat should handle it well so long as you stay at a steady pace and do not try and rush it. Travel at a comfortable pace and you should be fine. You'd will use more petrol as well so just keep that in mind
Not ideal conditions but its do-able. I'd leave and allow myself time to get back before the wind changes especially with a smallish boat coming from 20kms out

Jealous mate - jealous!! Good fish there bud, went out Mindarie sameday, - however not to fish; had to entertain kids and wife; - at one stage was fairly annoyed when the HDS10 sounder went berzerk - got the spot; giving it a go on sunday if weather holds.
Cheers mate.

Hey Rig sorry to get off the subject of ya catch. I too have a 475 quinnie and have been thinkin of raising the canopy alot recently. Have propped it up higher to have a look at it but not sure if i would be happy how it looked with clears on too as in if it looked odd or out of place. Is there a chance you could take a pic of what you have done and post it or pm it to me.
Cheers rossco

we caught a couple of very dark ones like the top fella there in your pic.
were both your baldies from the same ground?
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

i have a 4.5m quinny with a 40 merc. i put in an underfloor tank of approx 90l and ive gone out the back of rotto a few times. the furtherest i went was a few kays off the back. oh and i always launch from hillerys. i have to pick my days, but i find the trip back always seems to be a bit quicker than the trip out. takes about an hour and a half to get their and just over an hour back. the problem is though, when you are out there, you just dont want to come back,. but you have to force youself before the weather turns. and i think thats the important bit. always stick to the plan. i remember 1 day i left a bit late. it was ok, but another 30 min would have made a huge difference.... just remember, their is some good ledges off the back of rotto.... lol
I am so sick of catching wrasse!!!!!

Don't think that was a smart comment
Chilie you need to think before pressing save ....in saying that, Rig should have his boat and all his gear confiscated , just for showing up everyone else in their megabuck boats on how to go about catching good fish in his tinny...

sorry rig did'nt mean to offend, but those other fish in your photo make it look like a pup. Your right uncut/chris I don't know rig, and if you look at that photo alone with no background knowledge I'm sure you'll see what I mean.

Yeah. Fair enough I suppose if you are prepared for the
comeback. Personally I wouldn't bother questioning ethics unless there is something blatantly obvious which in this case it is not. Chances are rig got checked by the fish police at the ramp. That's their job and ours as serious rec fishos is to respect and promote the ethics of the game, not to question everyone one else.
