The condecending attitude we've been treated with and they come at us to do their job, where the Phuc are our licence fees going. Oh of course policing the new wire trace ban.
Saw the boat exiting Herring Bay going west last weekend at a great rate of knots - the same area where I saw DOT stop a boat that was going a great rate of knots.
Old boy also saw them during the week prior at Point Peron ramp doing what he said was 20 knots (he has been boating for 60 years) within the marina.
I wonder if they got a report of a piece of wire on a rod somewhere?
I heard the interviews on the radio and I believe the pros are pushing it harder than the fisheries departments,it's seems obvious it will be used to reduce Recs quota's even more. After Unpacking a few statements Hockey made it is clear its pros V recs with quotas and sustainability ect.Recs being the villains
If the App doesn't take off giving them something additional to work with, wont be long and I recon we will be hit with higher fees as well as a tagging system for the year same as the charters & Pro's.
I Googled to find out how reliable voluntary surveys might be. This is what comes up.
Subject to bias: Voluntary sampling is highly susceptible to bias, because researchers make little effort to control sample composition. The people who volunteer for the study may be very different than those who do not volunteer.
Yep screwed either way. But in my opinion no matter how pretty the ramp researcher's are. Don't give them anything. Don't provide anything to the app. Then when the next lot of rules come out we can all boycott the system not pay licenses not pay fines and see how their fisher funded programs go Then.
i will wager with you guys that the ''APP'' will start off as voluntary , and within 2 years it will be mandatory to log your trip launch point /destination and catch ,,
get ready to be shafted even more, as the new aquatic management act comes in , mandatory trip and catch reporting will be an online part of it ..
first your sold it as collecting good data , easy to use, save the fish , two minutes on your phone, easy app to download and , easy to use , , better data collection , blah blah blah
then its mandatory , then the more reductions will come ,,
next decade or sooner will see your demersal season go like the marron and abalone ,,
25 yrs ago when wet lining in Coral Bay we had to log kilos of each (not indivdual fish), so it'd be iether individual fish or total kg caught still now I'd say.
Pros have to ring in when they are leaving port and again when and where they return to. Also as Rob said, record the weights of all species they caught
So you will find them leaving just after midnight and returning just before midnight ti maximise the time they have on the days they can fish, there is no allowance for days lost through bad weather
Is the catch that gets unloaded off the boat cross referenced against the logs of caught fish or is it the honesty system? Even a simple typo here and there with a single digit missing or added by mistake would make the data collected massively incorrect. Will have the same problem with the rec app too I Spose.
I'm not sure what the perfect system for both pros/recs is but it seems like what we've got now is pretty shitful...
Before the ban starts and when the ban finishes everyone goes mad, ramps are full, no doubt people will fish shittier weather than they usually would, no doubt they'll be keeping their 4 plate sized dhus to add to the freezer to get them through the ban...
System seems doomed to fail IMO....
The current demersal ban will contunue further around the south coast soon, Windy will be soon included in the WC bio and then people will keep travelling further to Peacefull and Walpole...
Eventually they'll have this Marine Park from Bremmer to the Border closing that eastern coast and the demersal ban in the WCBR so they'll have us fucked in both directions...
W A fishing is doomed. Too many shit regulations in the south part of the state and too many sharks in the north .
Open up the shark fishing to the pros again and it could solve a lot of problems. The more sharks taking fish off the hook means people will have to get another to replace it so it means double the fish taken.
Fisheries and the government need to work with the every day angler who is affected by all this . Instead of the ones who think they know
Pretty sure the fisheries put out an "expression of interest" in the reopening of the northern shark fishery a couple of years back but there wasn't any takers, probably due to the huge drop in the value of shark fins and no market for the bigger size shark. Think its almost 20 years since it closed down

Fisheries new app where you can log your catches.
The consensus on the inter webs is that they shove it firmly without lube.

Here's a thought
Maybe if we all download and log nothing but shark catches???? An organised approach could throw a big spanner in their "research" data.
Is this the fisheries version of self serve checkouts in supermarkets, where we do their job for them and they pocket the savings?

I thought about that too but
I thought about that too but they'll prob use the lack of demersals to say the current measures aren't working and implement harsher restrictions

Why would you submit data
Why would you submit data when you know they will simply cherry pick it to get the results they want?

If it is only collecting
If it is only collecting information from the few that get catches of demersals then I am afraid the numbers will be manipulated.

ServicesWA App
Many will already have the app on their phones by default, as it has been attached to the ServicesWA App that many used during the pandemic.
It has been quietly tucked away inside the "Discoveries" section.
The app is only for pinks, dhu, baldies & breaksea caught in the West Coast bioregion.

Besides the pros having
Besides the pros having their days/hours reduced, do they have to log their catch?
Like 10 dhu, 20 pink, 50 sharks etc etc?
I guess my question is, are the pros currently accountable or is it guess work based oon days/hours?

Spot checks
They are subject to spot checks by the fisheries officers, same goes for the crab boats where they are under a quota system now

Mandatory
The discussion from pros was that it should be mandatory for recs to use the app as pros have to lodge their catch data.
I assume it would be if you were checked at ramp or at sea and your app didn't have data they could fine you?

Its not mandatory to use, so I doubt it'd be an offence if an error was made while voluntarily using it?
