Soaking pots question
Submitted by Travis S on Tue, 2014-11-25 12:53
Do timber cray pots need a day or so soaking before they catch well every time they have been out of the water and dried out? Or is this just more for new pots?
cheers

Soaking
We recommend for new craypots to paint tuna oil over the new slatty and it will allow your craypot to catch straight away.
Being that your pot has been in the water and then dried out the wood retains bait and growth smell so it should catch straight away providing its in a good area.

randall , I use the bore as it is easier/ cheaper , it waters the garden at the same time
cant see any reason to use good clean scheme water when I have the bore instead

Fizzing
My understanding is that soaking pots is to allow the air to purge out of the porous wood. The term the pros use is pots that fizz....that is the air coming out of the wood. Brand new pots need to soak out not only the air, but any resin that might affect catches...although some types of resin might actually help, who knows.
So I think soaking is important for all pots that have dried out, but moreso for new pots. This year, I know of some crayfishers who caught well after a 1 day soak, so it's not fatal if there are plenty of crays around.

Thanks fellas,
Wondered why in 4 pots near good ground on the 3 mile I had no crays today.
heaps of weight and good bait.
other people getting them same area, thought maybe because the went in dry yesterday.

Crays
Chucked ours in brand new last Saturday.. Pulled Sunday (the next day) for a laugh, 26 in the first pot.. I worked on a pro boat for years if they are still fizzing(dry soaking up) they normally catch less but hardly ever none if they are in the right spots. My advice to anyone not easyly getting there limit now is to move your pots beacause we and most of me mates are absolutely killing it at the moment..
