Soft Plastics Rod

Had a few soft plastic rods over the last year or so, pretty much all have snapped with hooking on to sambo's etc.

was just wondering if anyone would recommend any in the cheap to medium price range!

mainly used for targetting snapper,l sambo's, dhu's etc and one that has a bit of pull to it will be using 20-30 pound braid.

Cheers

Have a search mate, thousands of previously discussed ideas.

My recommendation in your price range is the eupro twincraft, but head into one of the site sponsors and they will look after you.

SP rod!

Sun, 2012-04-29 19:17

MLBF, I use the FWA 8-10kg rod which is more a 8-12kg rod thats 7ft and suitable for SP and jigs etc!

I've caught heaps of fish on that rod including sambos/dhufish/GT's/rankins/coral trout etc and the blank is very strong..........no probs with 20 & 30lb

Well priced also, pop in and see the boys at my shop.........make sure you mention your a FW member........they'll look after you!

A few people turn up their nose at the FWA rods....brand snobs. The blanks are good and the fittings top notch. I got a 9ft beach spin from Ryan and it is a terrific rod, very well priced for what you get.

If u can find one

Mon, 2012-04-30 21:40

I use a harty rise, sulfphy 7' with 20lb , can handle 30lb easy, not sure if u can get them new any more but there was a2nd hand one on here for sale not long ago for $200 I think, its really quiet stiff and have had no problem working 1oz +8" plastic in 30m + or 1/2oz + 5" plastic in 5 -10m for pinks, I rate them high as I have knocked over some good fish with it and they can handle alot! Impressed me so much that when I saw a 2nd hand one for sale on here I grabbed it as a back up in case something happens to the one I'm using.
The FWA 7' 8 -10kg spin was not out when I was chasing a plastic rod and after playing with one it would be my next choice after the h/rise

Yes, the tip of the FWA 7ft rod is "tippy enough" to cast metals/SP/stickbaits etc

If you are breaking them all

Tue, 2012-05-01 15:43

If you are breaking them all the time, I would look at how you fight fish and how the rod gets looked after.  Graphite rods are damaged real easy- even if it doesnt appear damaged.  Bang it against a car door or have them loose in a boat and its a recipie for a broken rod.  Also if your breaking them while hooked up to fish then you might be high sticking it.  Raising it up too high above your head and having a fish take a power dive will snap it near the tip.  Sambos or any sort of demersal fish really can pull and last thing you would want is a rod that is pointing upwards.  Try to keep the tip lower and put some hurt onto them that way.  Ive popped a couple of rods on fish but it was usually when I did something stupid like high sticking.  You see the jig rods have max drag ratings for certain angles of use- in other words increase the angle and you will have to run less drag.  The rods obviously lose alot of thier pulling power up high so get them back down below horizontal and use the butt of the rod to really give the fish some curry.

Nitro rods are my recommendation for those wanting a decent graphite rod.  For that sort of fishing you are looking at the viper or the godzilla spin if you want to go real heavy on the fish.  The viper is rated 6-8kg but I fish 40lb on it with a stella 5000 and have locked the drag numerous times.  Still havent popped it.  For a 30lb stick its perfect.  All the power in the butt to pull up fish or stop them hitting home, and light enough in the tip to throw plastics on 3/8oz jigs all day long.  I use it chasing spanglies around exmouth but nailed some nice coral trout, giant herring to a metre, tuna, cod and trevally on it.  Even took a big chinaman in shallow water with it.  No problem taming that bugger at all.  Best of all, they have a rod insurance policy.  Break it and it gets fixed no questions asked, just mail it off and send through the 60 buck excess and freight charge.

What size Reel?

Tue, 2012-05-15 13:24

Picked up a FWA 7' 8-10kg the other day and was going to run my 6k gosa on it but that reel is far to big and heavy. So a new reel is in order I'm looking at the Shimano Rarenium just can't decide on a size 4k or 5k.

SUSTAIN!!!!!

Looking at them on a computer screen just does no justice to these reels at all. I went into a store this morning and looked at both the Rarenium and Sustains needless to say I walked out the store alittle poorer.

I didn't realise as with most of the Shimano range the 4k and 5k are the same body size just the spool size changes so went with the bigger spool.
