Sounder Advice (screenshots)
Hi,
Went out with my brother last night just in the sound. The weather was pretty average for our tinny so we tried to find some fish in relatively sheltered areas and have a crack. I was wondering if anyone can advise what they think I am looking at on the screenshots below. I am pretty sure what's going on (have left a hint on screen shot 1), but would appreciate others interpretations. We had three lines out in the bottom two shots but the lines were not below us. We were moving slowly in the first but at anchor in the second two. All three shots are at different locations, although the last two are pretty close to each other.
Screen shot 1 - split screen day mode on gen 2 HDS7 everything auto
Screen Shot 2
Screen Shot 3 - night mode full screen sounder
Any advice / opinion appreciated.
Cheers,
Jarrid

yeah was choppy southerly on pretty much flat bottom.
any thoughts on the first one? i was near a wharf (AMC4 if you know the area) and i think that a lot of what you can see is a reflectoin off the piles. i chucked a bait over which got picked off so my brother threw a smaller hook over and got a baby pink. so, in summary i think it is mainly piles reflections with a few baby snapper thrown in.
as for two and three which are in another area, i was pretty adament that two was decent sized snapper and was pretty much frothing with excitement, but alas only one missed small run. looked like a good fish when it loaded up but unfortunately gone before i got it out of the rodholder. photo three was a bit later in the night and is more typical of what it looked like for most of our time spent there.
snelled 6/0s lightly weighted scalies with regular cubing and photo two was taken around sunset. apart from the one run baits were pretty much untouched. also tried a softie to no avail. mayber we're just unlucky...

Jarrid the size of the arches
Jarrid the size of the arches (3m) on the first one did make me wonder, reflection off piles - wouldn't have expected arches - how close to the piles were you?. not that deep (cone would be relatively narrow still) to suggest there would be a great distance variation from the object on the edge of the cone compared to the centre of the cone to get high arches. Mullo's perhaps??
Forgive my ironic comment above but sometimes I think we try to intepret to much from a sounder shot (and realistically were just speculating rather than knowing), rather than keeping it basic.
They others are consistent with snapper soundings and I too would have a bit of anticipation as lines went down.
Maybe better luck next time

What depth ?
Strange that the depth in top left corner is showing 17.5m and on right side is showing 13.5m.Also you can turn off that stupid flashing display on the right side of the screen giving you more usable screen space.

I think what happened is that I kept drifting and went back with the cursor, depth is probably where I was at the time. Can get rid of the scope but there is plenty of screen on the sounder

I think what happened is the operator of the sounder is no good at fishing- all he got was 1 herring and claims he had a huge run but it mysteriously vanished the moment he picked up the rod. His brother on the other hand is a gun and landed
the only pinky of the night.
knowing our luck though the fish on the sounder were probably buff bream

My best guess for photo one.
My best guess for photo one. your tranny might have a bit of "spill beam" sort of like a torch. Sound that is sort of leaking off to the side of the main cone. So the gain is high enough to get a return off the objects when they are still a fair way away from the boat and not in the cone yet. This may be giving you the long weak tails leading onto and off your proper arches. Just a theory, could be absolute crap.
