Sounder and transducer advice/ opinions

 Hi all,

i know that there are a few threads already on sounders but I have a few other points to consider and am looking for info on people's experience.

i currently have two combo Lowrance units which I think are the LCX27c models- one which I use for sonar and one for the GPS. Good screen size and they are linked together as well so makes marking points, tracking etc pretty easy and provides some contingency if one craps itself.

but.... I am considering another separate sounder for some better performance. Currently I just have the standard 50/200 transducer and the first step is to upgrade this to a more powerful 1Kw- and is is where the questions start.

Current transducer is mounted externally, will I be able to keep this as well as another 1Kw transducer for a separate unit?

i am considering a thru hull transducer/s. Any precise positions that these need to be installed? Any idea of the size of the holes that need to be cut?

would you go for a thru hull or transom mount? It's just the size that puts me off hanging it off the back!

Lowrance or Furuno sounder- would consider the HDS8 or 10 or the Furuno 587 or 295 depending on cost? Anything to look out for if I mix current Lowrance transducer with one for a Furuno?

any other information or suggestions is also appreciated.

thanks

brett

 Hi Dougie,

7.8 metre ally mono hull.

twin (widely spaced) outboards. Current sounders read 'ok' so turbulence doesn't seem to be much of any issue.

cheers
