Sounder installation

Calling all sounder gurus,

Installed my Garmin 160C sounder as attached. Noticing she's not holding bottom and getting screen clutter >12kn. Could the above install location be gettin interference from the strakes? I know I can prob just drill some new holes and check this theory out - but figured some FW advice would be best bet to start with, before I break out the cordless...

Cheers,

Ado

there's probably an anomaly on the hull in front of the transducer that you cant see, I had my garmin transducer in 1 location for about 7 years without a problem sudenly it started to lose track of the bottom around 15 knts, I tried lifting it, lowering it moving it sideways nothing helped even though there was nothing on the hull to interfere with it and it was between the strakes, I finaly moved it to the other side of the boat (as it said in the instructions but i took no notice of at installation) and fixed it in the same position just the other side of the boat it now tracks the bottom no problems even over 30 kts. a good way to test without drilling is to fix a piece of king board to your existing mounting holes and drill new holes in that until you find the correct place. king board is what they use between your motor and the hull for packing.

Cheers FF. Theres an external ali plate so not drilling thru hull, although some king board may be the go. thanks. Will check hull for anomoly (welding slag?) but seems Ok thus far....It just sucks when these problems occur at sea, and the only rememdy is to try something and sea trial again. Not wot you want when chasing fish....

Wood plank

Wed, 2009-01-07 18:15

you can alway use a piece of wood just mount it at the angle of the hull but not below the water line as for anomalies a slight dent or wave imperfection in the hull could be enough to effect it the benefir of the board is you could make it the width of the boat for testing purposes
good luck it may take a few trips to sort it

Cheers Carn-ite. Will drop her and see what results. May also shift a inch to starboard to centre between strakes.

Move it over and down.  Try tilting it  more too.  All trial and error I'm afraid mate.  I would move it down as far as I could possibly go.

Too many holes?

Wed, 2009-01-07 20:23

I've got the same problem as wrassinator, sh*ts me to tears.

Is there any easy way to try different positions without drilling a heap of holes.... Or am I missing something?

Pete

Transducer Probs

Wed, 2009-01-07 21:00

Like Fishy Fingers said attach a piece of wood to the mounting bracket and drill holes in the wood fix the Transducer to different locations on the piece of wood so your not drilling holes in the mount. Make sure the wood is same size as mount as over hang might cause bubbles.

Run a ruler across the bottom of the hull see where the water line is should'nt be above the transducer lower mould.
by the pic it looks like it needs to come up a fair bit

I rekon that you had a rooster tail coming off that thing when you were moving.  Agreed, too low.

Posted this for you in the other thread.  Only 3mm in the water.

Cheers all. General suggestions seem to indicate too low and to lift er up. Think I will try this as the first correction and hopefully the last. From some of your pics, mine definately does look too low and the rooster tail theory seems logical.

Thanks again crew, and will let u know how mods go.
