Sounder/GPS combo

Love this forum.  Very informative, so I'm going to continue to pick everyone's brains.

Im needing (wanting) a new gps/fish finder.

The thing is, I have no idea what to get. Do I get a gps plotter and fish finder separately, or get a combo unit.

What I need is colour maps, and preferably a colour fish finder. It needs to be easy to use and read for me and the wife. With the fish finder I'd like to have a reasonable idea of wha the bottom is made of and what the contours are shaped like.

I only want to spend around $1000 all up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

For $1000

For $1000 you will probably have to get a combo unit..... What boat is it going on? Lowrance combo units seem to get a good wrap from a few people. I have the plotter in lowrance matched with a furuno sounder and it is a great set up but a few more $$$ if you can save a bit more.....

So the lowrance elite 5 dsi

So the lowrance elite 5 dsi looks pretty good then.  I've seen them under a grand.

The boat it's going on is a quicksilver 520 cuddy cab, with a 115 merc on the back. Currently I have a garmin 72 gps and a navman fish 4100sx.  Quite frankly they're both crap.

I have recently purchased the Lowrance HDS5. Paid all up just over $800 including the card for Aus from Navionics. Have yet to put it thru its trials as the boat is still in transformation stage. But very impressed with its graphics and performance.

If your got the money, i have a FURUNO GP-7000F, typically goes for @ $3500 with a 1kw or 600w (why bother) transducer. But, i go pretty deep so the extra power helps. Schit hot unit. It colour, its 7" screen so really good size, can split screen to 3 displays, so me, i luv it. Not for everyone though

Good luck

HDS 7 !!!!!

Tue, 2011-11-01 21:29

I just got the HDS 7 and Furuno 620 for an amazingly good deal from All Boats at the boat show... Go the HDS7 combo.... it will be just over a grand but it will be worth it... I havent had time yet to give it a good try out but what I have seen it sh!ts all over my last Navman combo... with the Navonics card you can easily plan trips and save/ load waypoints on your PC and then just upload them to the GPS unit before you head out... definatley give All Boats a go as they try very hard to keep their prices as close to the American market as possible and give very good customer support, they have answered a lot of peoples tecnical questions on here...
