Sounders

Righto fellow fishos out there.....Andy Mac reckons my current sounder is pretty useless(and I tend to agree) so what should I upgrade to. Currently have a mono Raymarine L265 which can't read anything over 15 knots
I hear a lot of positives about the Furuno
I had a recommendation the other day to put in a Humminbird Matrix 97X Combo Unit.....has anyone got any feedback on this unit ?

Also any feedback on the pros n cons of combo units vs separate units would be appreciated.

Cheers

hi mate was in the same position that you are in now, i looked and looked and finished up with a sounder and gps seperate i got navman 4500 sounder(600wat) it is awsome,i fish out to 200m and you still get a great picture,5600 tracker also a great unit 3000 waypoints awasom as well

reason for the 2 are if one fails you can still fish with one unit it fails its time to go home

hopoe that helps

Just fitted a furuno FCV620, still trying to learn how to use it properly but would highly recommend
Have fished with a mate who really knows how to use it and found the fish no worries.

Another vote for Furuno.

Just got a Furuno 585 on the new boat and only been out once but the difference is just amazing. Is the same unit as the FCV620 just bigger screen and 1kw capable.

All depends on how much you want to/can spend as well. The furuno will cost you more up front than say a Navman.

Sounders

Just been through the same thing. I asked lots of different people questions and got all sorts of varying opinions and ended up going separate units with a Furuno FCV 585 and a Lowrance 5200c Plotter. Currently fitting and wiring them up now.

Plotter/sonar

Sun, 2007-06-10 22:46

I'd never go for a combined unit myself.
For me its v important so see all of the plot area I'm working and have a separate screen with the fishy info.
Why buy a big screen and then halve it? besides the probs with the dual use keypad?
A guy in my club has gone thro 2 combo units in less than 2 years and has still gone and got himself another (the latest Hummingbird side scan) hope for him something doesn't fail again!
Oh I use Lowrance but will be upgrading the sonar sooner rather than later, so all the info here is worth reading.

mine furuno keeps a reading

Thu, 2007-07-05 08:22

mine furuno keeps a reading on the sounder untill you leave the water ,upto 38 knots also depends on conditons chop .MY sounder old jrc b& w sounder, had a similar airmar transducer ,i dentical where  it sits in the water but wouldnt read any thing over 12 knots .so you have to have at least 600 watts  power. My next one going to be at least  1 kw .

Furuno!

Go Furuno for sure, I've had navmans, H/Bird, Eagle and JRC......Furuno is the winner for sure!

Yeh you pay more for it but you pay for what you get and it's technology is passed down from Furuno's commercial aspect. Furuno units can also be serviced/fix locally if need be (seen 1 return in 2 years after selling shit loads) most all other brands have a far higher return rate so this is important and on that note by locally so you get your warranty!

The FCV620 is good, the FCV 585 is very nice with the bigger screen etc even with a 600w transducer it's good. Pass on the combo units and PM me for any more help....so many variables!
