Sounders
Submitted by Dhu a beer on Sat, 2013-03-23 21:46
I have a Lowrance x515cdf sounder with a 200/50 khz transducer.I have just started going shelf fishing taging mates with better sounders for picking up fish at these depths. Is there anything that I can do to improve this sounder or should I replace it and if so what is the best for shelf fishing, that shows structure and fish clearly. Those that I follow run Furuno 295 and 585.
Cheers

Hi Dhu a beer
Although not quite fishing off the shelf I thought you'd find the following images interesting. I fished last weekend with a customer who fitted a Furuno FCV-295 to his boat earlier this year. It was pretty slow on his usual spots so we moved out a bit deeper and started sounding on the 100m mark. The chart gave nothing, it was just a 100m countour line but we invested some time in looking for new ground. We found this very interesting mark on the 295.
and pulled this from our first drift and yes we marked the spot
BTW, Luke Chivers (Chivers Marine) has been running a 295 on some deep water and has some impressive pics.

There isn't a lot you can do
There isn't a lot you can do to improve the X515 so probably best to move forward. Having run the 295 for a little while in a couple of different boats it's hard to use anything else now....BUT, the new FCV-587 with a 1kW transducer is hard to beat for value and performance. It is also an easier installation with many transducer options (transom mount, in-hull and thru-hull). 587 also has some fantastic improvements over the 585 and there is $250 cash back on this unit for a short time. If you are not price concious then consider a 295, otherwise the 587 is still awesome. I will get around to posting some pics from 295's in the future...

Hi,thanks for that,I will have to come and have a closer look at the 587,sounds like it maybe a more practical fit up option.

Price for sounder?
Hi Chivers and Furuno,
any idea on price estimate to supply and fit either a 587 or a 295 with a 1Kw transducer?
will be going onto an ally boat and I think I would prefer a thru hull transducer but happy to be convinced otherwise.
thanks

I looked at the 295 and 587.
I looked at the 295 and 587. The 295 is no doubt better and if going 2kW plus tranny a must, but the 587 screen is brighter an easier to read, and the 295 is dam large and hard to fit.
Attached 587 pic.
