Decided to go down and fish for stingray but no luck, started to berley up big time and a school of mullet came in and after that it was one of the best sights i seen 10-15 salmon going nuts ramming the mullet school in the air(like popping for GTS), they left as fast as they came unfortunately otherwise for sure would of got 1.

That sounds cool, I havent fished down there before. whats the beach like, do u fish off the rocks or is there a sandy area to fish from? seen any BIG ray down that way?
I normally fish around north beach, so south beach could be an ideal change lol
hope u get a chance with the salmon next time mate!

35-40lb mono 300yds is
35-40lb mono 300yds is enough to land most rays as they dont go far out past 100 metres(nots the ones i seen anyways), and most breakages are due to when they stick to the floor and wont budge so got to use mono to ping the line to annoy them to move again.

mate, the majority of the
mate, the majority of the rays ive hooked upto have made it past the 100 metre mark on locked up drag. hell, ive been spooled several times. you have to keep pressure on the ray and dont let it run, cos it will build up momentum. most of my breakages are when the ray is close to the rocks/beach and they see it, turn and run. most times you dont have enough time to brace and the line pings.

beach fishing is for ray is
beach fishing is for ray is much more different then rocks beach they feel much safer and come towards shore sometimes which is a bonus. Yes drag has to be lock tight and give it as little room to move as possible, thats when it usually sticks to the floor when it does that not even 100lb line will be able to pull it off the floor.

mate, if you persist, you
mate, if you persist, you can lift a ray with lighter line. If you put enough pressure onto them, they will pull up. ive done it before with 30lb line. a couple of times.

I agree leemo in that most
I agree leemo in that most breaks for me occur closer in, thats why these days if chasing rays i use like 9 metres 120lb mono leader, cuz they are sneakier than we give them credit for and find the rocks to break off on

unfortunately cuth dont have
unfortunately cuth dont have a camera, need to save up and buy one, actually that day was using my brothers rod old ugly stick 10ft with a old butterworth reel 35lb line, so was pretty lucky to land it, landbased beach rays you actually dont need that much line but i prefer to use mono so i can ping the line when the ray sticks to the floor and wont move. Havent seen any in metro area that are even close to 30-50kg when, but dunborough there is some big monsters there, same as esperance grain terminal

have landed a few a few
have landed a few a few black rays around northern reefs (north beach to two rocks) that would go around 60-70kg at best, with a few beasts breaking us off. I have to strongly dissagree with you dicey about 300yds being sufficient though as i have seen some strip well over 450m and keep running, till we have been forced to lock drag and break off.
Me and mates have upgraded this year and will be carrying over 600m of line, plus some heavy duty rods (buying a loomis sharkey myself in the coming weeks). So hopefully some big fish to come!
I reckon rays are really underrated as a sports fish, if played right the fight is intense and I have also seen rays swim past a well presented bait so i dont reckon they will take just anything as many people believe.
Where abouts is eagle bay mate, Dunsborough?

yup down in dunsborough, the
yup down in dunsborough, the black rays stay close to shore, seen one that actually went next to the rocks and started slapping it with its fins, all the rays i seen caught there dont go past 100m they go sideways but most people just cut the line, the ones down there are one of the smartest i seen, tried to trick them into taking my bait right from shore by chucking a few mulies out and chucking my rig out infront of it, eats the unrigged mulies and then bolts.

yea mate i have been in the
yea mate i have been in the same situation on rotto, huge ray 2m+ across 30 metres out, would take herring with no hooks thrown out, put some hooks in the herring then no matter how well rigged and hidden, this thing wouldnt take it!
Guess they gotta be smart to get that big

also i reckon they require a
also i reckon they require a bit of time on the sea floor to cover themselves in sand and make themselves "stick". maybe thats why if using heavy enough gear this doesnt become too big a problem. I know watching fights with rays from south african sites 200kg rays generally dont stop that much, might be for this reason.
Im no expert by a long way though, still learning. Would love to hear RAGBAGs thought on this question

i aint no pro on rays
i aint no pro on rays either, but most of the fights i seen landbased from beach havent stripped much line, maybe they dont roam around too much as in territorial?? when i save up probaly go for a penn senator outfit that way i can chase shark and rays.

I dunno, most of the time
I dunno, most of the time when they stick to the bottom there not gonna come off any time soon. We once hooked a ray about 100kg in 60m of water. Sucked the bottom, so tied the the braid to the boat and powered off. Wound up, and the bloody thing was still on hahah.
What kind of ray was it Dicey, I only manage to snag eagles at south beach

the ray i hooked up to wasnt
the ray i hooked up to wasnt at south beach, was in dunsborough fishing for salmon, i think its a black thorntail ray, tail length easily 1.5m had 3 separate barbs on it body was massive i reckon the height of the body sitting on the sand was 1.5ft at its highest point dont want to go into describing the body it was huge, i thought the thing had no eyes at first bent over to have a look, scary eyes would say a humans fist deep.

have heard of 200kg rays
have heard of 200kg rays landed in south africa, normally requires a serious overhead, a stiff as sharking rod and years of experience. On salmon gear, thats probably a world reckord

well it never got weighed haha only a rough estimate, suprised myself really never knew a my brothers 10ft australian made ugly stick could bend as far as it could, would say fight lasted 1hr+ no big runs just moves like 40-50m then sticks in 1 place.

i would say the ray i caught was between 150-170kg, but the definitely looks bigger then the 2nd picture for sure that only looks like 120-150kg.
