South West jigging

With the weather gods playing ball it was not a time to miss such an opportunity........

Not a breath of wind. Thats Barneyboy (Mark) at the helm.

Decided to stop at the tip of the cape as there was minimal swell and a large bommie with a big ledge...... unfortunatley Mark was using light gear and got bricked by a big dhuie on a snapback SP.......better luck next time mate.

We then went around the cape looking for fish.

We found plenty along the current line and proceeded to find the sambo's....

It was double hookup after hookup.......and great fun on light gear.

Thats a Oceanside jig master PE 2-3 rod and matched with a Certate 4000 (thanks Bones76).

About time as there were hundreds of the buggers around

Small SBT jigged on a shout lighten 70g

Mark in the action with a snapback SP.

We caught heaps of fish species including shallowtail, heaps of BA, wrasse and sambo's...............

I was predominantley chasing demersals on jig and only used either a caprice kid of shout lighten or shabba and no matter how slow I jigged couldn't get past the sambo's and they were even taking then on the bottom when stationary...but great fun on light gear.

Mark mostly threw snapback SP when not pirating my jig rods.....he he and caught all of the above species and more. And he got bricked twice by big dhuies on SP. Better upgrade Mark Tongue out.

Fantastic day on the water. Plenty of fish in the boat.

And yes Harro and Brendan (Seaquest) that was us waving at you when you came past the Cape.

shout lightens......

Mon, 2010-03-15 12:41

Finally........Wink

good jigs as you know. Lost that one in the pic so need to replace it as that colour was dynamite (pink/silver/blue). It was interesting as I changed to green I picked up more demersal but mostly undersize BA.......

yeh was masses of SBT that size.

Good work Damo. I thought it

Mon, 2010-03-15 13:02

Good work Damo. I thought it was you but wasn,t 100%.

All I could jig yesterday was sambos, but the boys got some nice fish on baits. No pics because I left the memory card out of the camera.

Those JM rods are awesome. I been using the 150 overhead and love it.

Starting to get some good jigging spots sussed now. Great fun when it comes together.
We should have a FW jigging comp down here one day. Theres enough of us down here who are into jigging.

I'm surprised you havent

Mon, 2010-03-15 15:59

I'm surprised you havent named it Palloran yet?

Nice bit of action out there on the jigs. Good variety of species too. Those shout lightens are definately nice jigs. Lots of small tuna the same size up at the FAD's here as well, seems theres a lot of them around. Were any of the BA sized?

yeh that would be by boat name "Palaran"

Mon, 2010-03-15 16:08

considering my upcoming move I may just make it offical and tag the hull.....

most were right under legal...but Mark scored a healthy sized BA for the table.

I need some more jigs......Wink

plagued by sambo's though...but great fun.

Mark was action all day on SP

boat is a custom Groundswell

Mon, 2010-03-15 15:57

It's 4.6m, 4mm hull 3mm sides.

Extra wide consiole and 100l tank, 60 four stroke on back.

Still being produced locally in Perth. Strong boat for its size.

When I bought it I was heading north again, of which I am now doing 4 years later......

Looking forward to chasing Barra again Smile

How is a redlined 20lb braid a light outfit??

Wed, 2010-03-17 18:05

Iam looking at building a 6 foot 9 inch 15kg spin jig rod. Nice chrisp responsive tip with a parobolic curve, cork grips, alconites and silicon tip. Hows that for upgrade? It will pull their lips off their faces..

Sorry if Iam upsetting the applecart by saying this

Thu, 2010-03-18 19:38

but I feel it needs to be said.. sure these little southern bluefin tuna would make great baits but they also grow up to be big awesome beautiful creatures. IMO it would be a shame to see people going out to catch and keep these just for bait. This species deserves more respect than being called good bait or just being used for bait. This species numbers is also on the decline. For the sake of a bit of bait I would rather pick something else to use than insult this magnificent fish,

Thanks, i feel better now!!

Better pull my finger out

Fri, 2010-03-19 19:14

Yeh your right Damo ive been better at pulling the anchor lately than catching fish but i will bounce back. As fas as keeping a couple of small tuna for bait Barneyboy theres no problem with that, its not like Bluetonic is saying hes going to stock pile them we all know a bit of fresh live bait is always good on the day for something different.

Garbo,

I dont have a problem with it. What you do with the fish you catch is your business. Iam just expressing my opinion on Southern Bluefin Tuna.
