Spare GPS.

Hi folks, I am interested to know if anyone runs a second GPS/Sounder unit as a stand alone GPS.
I have a Elite5 chirp out of my tinnie that I am thinking of running alongside my HDS7.
Is there any pitfalls with doing this ? Is it worth setting up as a second combo unit?
I will still run the HDS7 but primarily as a sounder.
Your opinions are valued as always...

I think you’ll find most people will use 2 units, rather than split screen

I would run two. Pain the arse I reckon with combo units unless you got a hds10 or something big like that. I run a dragonfly 7 in my dingy and going to put a furuno 620 as the sounder when I get a chance to install it.

I run two HDS7's linked by Ethernet cable. Much easier than have a split screen or constantly changing screens.

Not sure if Elite can link up via Ethernet with HDS, but two HDS’s hooked up is great for marking ground on sounder and having waypoint pop on other GPS unit.

I run a dedicated sounder with a HDS7. Wouldn't want a screen any smaller than that for my plotter

I only use the one in my dinghy, my dragonfly 5, be a little bit impractical to run a second one I feel.

it was great in the tinnie, nice & compact and easy to use.

we got 2 units, one being our original navman 510 tracker as backup but also has all our spots on it and also run a hummingbird 917c split. hand to have a backup just in case your main unit packs it in or freezes up as mine did . not too bad if you know the waters but new waters it helped

If you have an iPad get a waterproof cover and download the navionics app and then use I pad as a plotter, you can get ram mounts if you want to mount it also...that's what I would be doing for a cheap and effective way in a dinghy

yep i run a HDS10 and a furuno 585.
Makes life that much easier when marking ground and driving at spots having a screen big enough you dont have to squint at cos its so small.

Thanks.
Thanks for all the feed back folks.
I am another for Navionics, great app.
Based on your suggestions, i think I will connect up the Elite5 and use it for the GPS only. Only because I didn't realy want to have 2 transducers out the back of the boat. This way if the main one packs it in, at least I can still navigate back if I am in a tricky spot.
Again, helpful as ever. Thanx...
Any further comments welcome....
