Speargun reel setup
Submitted by Griffo84 on Mon, 2013-05-27 15:04
G'day everyone,
I've recently bought a 1.2m rabitech stealth pro and an aussie reel. I have never set up/shot a gun with a reel before and was wondering how to correctly rig it up. In order would you attach the shooting line (line the gun comes with) to the bungee chord then attach the reel line to the other end of the bungee?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Does the reel have a line
Does the reel have a line clamp in it?
Most do, and you can use this to tension the line, and toss the bungy.
Otherwise you can just use a loop of elastic to the line release loop, and it would allow you swap between floatline and reels.

Till - Not sure if the reel has a line clamp in it? It seems pretty basic however it does have screw to adjust the drag. If you google 'aussie speargun reels' and click on images, you will see a red reel which is exactly the type I have.
Also is the line release loop the clip that attaches to the bottom of the handle on the gun? I'm quite new to this so I need it explained in a bit more detail.
Cheers

U don't need a bungee with a reel. I just tie the reel line straight to the mono, gets rid of any clips and unwanted objects in the line. I keep my reel on permanent.

Cheers mate. When you say the mono do you mean the shooting line the bottom of the spear is connected to?

That's right..
…most people use a bowline knot, as it is easy to undo if need be. Just check it every time before you dive as they can come loose

Yer I normally run 5m or so
Yer I normally run 5m or so of shooting line before the reel. That way u can get a good shot off without tension from the reel line

You don't really want to be
You don't really want to be tying any knots from mono to reel line as it makes it more difficult to unthread a fish that has been shot in the head. Best to use a pigtail swivel on the end of your reel line and have the mono clip into that via a loop made with a crimp, then in the event that you shoot a fish and have to feed the shaft through the same way it went in, all you have do do is unclip, feed through and clip back on. Pig tail gets tied via bowline onto reel line after the reel line exits the muzzle through a D-shackle. Beats untying bowlines or having to cut lines and re rig them. I'm not sure how you would even try and untie a bowline in the water, with gloves on.
Your line release is near the handle of the gun, holds your line in place when gun is loaded, will release when you press the trigger.
Your Aussie reel has a simple and effective drag. In most situations you want it set extremely lightly, just enough tension to keep your mono on your line holder and line release. Use your hand to control friction on the reel when you shoot a fish, do not set your drag heavy, much safer that way especially in deep water.
If you want to swap between reel and float line, just lock up the drag on your reel, and clip your floatline on to your handle.

easier way just pull the spear all the way through the fish onto the shooting line, turn the spear around and push it back through the opposite way it came in... no need to clip/unclip...

That might work some of the time, but often it's hard enough to get the spear out of a fishes brain box just the once, let alone feed it back through, flopper and all, especially on fish like cod, tuskies and large trout. Takes 15 seconds to unclip, feed through and reclip.
