spearguns

Hi all,
I know there has been many posts about spearguns but I'm relativley new to the sport and i just have a couple of questions.
Firstly what is a good length to spear with from 5 to 10 metres free diving (obviously).
secondly what is the best gun to be using for that depth of diving for around $400.
Most of the diving will be done on the south coast if that makes any difference.
thanks in advance

Second the 1200, it's a good
Second the 1200, it's a good allround size. I use the RA Caranx for a bit more punch but it's easy to upgrade a sparid to a single 20mm or twin 16mm rubbers.

vote 3 for the Rob Allen
vote 3 for the Rob Allen 1200 Sparid.
Good compromise between reef and bluewater and around $400-450 or go to South Africa and get one for $250.

Or an Edge (Australian made),
Or an Edge (Australian made), or a Freedivers (quiet barrel) or a Torelli, etc etc.
Lots of great ali rail guns out there including the RA. Check the forums on spearfishing.com.au, extreme spearfishing, spearoz, spearboard etc etc.
You'll find 1000x more info on there than you will ever gain on here.

Ive had this gun for 5 years no problems with it its very accurate and easy to aim the Hawaiin skin divers magazine rated it one of the most accurate guns.
Try mindarie diving accadamy got mine for just over $300 the only draw back is the muzzle only allows 1 band but you can buy a twin band muzzle pretty cheap

guns
i live in nth west and dive anything from below 5m to 20m+ and i have 2 guns.
one is a 1.4m edge with a paxman reel and the other is a 1.4m Rob Allen Zulu.
only just bought the RA from SA but the edge is the best gun you can have in my opinion. shoots anything, power to burn and light and easy to move in the water.
i have shot king george whiting with it at rotto and to think the 46kg spanish mack world record was shot with one.
you can get them from 1.1-1.4m so depending on the size you want, its a great gun

Sparid
Got a RA Sparid 1200 which I use Down Albany and Karratha Atm.. Its a good size for open water and reef. Very simple guns and deadly accurate.. but the safety switch is probably the only downfall, they get sticky and are hard to switch on/off when wearing gloves.

have a 1.2 and 1.4 Freedivers
have a 1.2 and 1.4 Freedivers Evo gun and both have been very reilable and I have secured many fish with both.
I have used a few different guns (rob allen, mares, pelaj) and have found the freedivers the best value for money and very accurate. I have used the 1.2 in all spearfishing situations, hunting for dhus, baldies, trout, tuna and spanish.
I havent used any of the riffle or andre wooden guns yet but they are a little out of my price range, usually around $700 for a 1.4.
I have heard there is a new wholesaler in WA for freedivers gear so send me a PM if you would like his contact details. I hear he looks after fishwrecked members pretty well.
Just ordered a new Freedivers 1.4 Evo Carbon from him, cant wait to get out a use it when the weather breaks and the swell drops again.
