speeding boats in the swan
my mate was fishing in the swan fish last night and had just pulled up on the shore just outside the eight knot zone when a large launch flew past putting out a big wake he was hit by the wave and thrown over board breaking three ribs his mate was throw onto land with no injuries a young boy who was a little bit further up fishing a rock wall was throw into the water by the wake and another boat next to the shore was washed up the beach three metres! and the police say because it was just out of the eight knot zone they can do nothing and apparently he had already been warned for speeding in the river earlier that day! this boat was a rather large launch worth millions! has anyone had any other run ins with rich people who think they own the water because they can afford a big launch???

Speed zone
Regardless of whether he was in or out of the 8 knot speed zone he is still responsible for the wake created by his boat

get his details to the Swan
get his details to the Swan River Trust,,,,
they can make his life difficult if his wake is cause river bank damage,
Then again once you know where he moores up, nothing like a nice big message on river speedlimits sprayed with red paint on his ginpalace to remind him next time to slow down!
What a pric. Where was it??? near the Ascot ramp??? or further up at the Maylands???

I just checked something and if it was after sunset, then all zones are limited to a max of 10knots or less if signposted.
Even the open water ski zones revert to 10knots at night.
So river police can ping him if it was after sunset and he caused a wake by speed judged to be in excess of 10knots

So he was already caught once
So he was already caught once speeding that day ?
Not much the law can do about it,,fine him but that will not bother him if he is rich,,,,could be charged with endangering life i guess, possible jail sentence but a good lawyer will get out of it,,

See this all the time - not
See this all the time - not only th ebig gin palace's even seen people water skiing well into the 5 knot area. Recently had a jet ski race up to our stern jump the wake, we were passing through the ski area at at 18 knots, and nearly wound up in the back of our boat. Jet ski had adult and two kids on it. When we turned and followed the )@#$ in just got a load of abuse. Police were not interested
The water police need more patrols and greater powers to inforce. At the way its going the river will eventually get closed to power boats if these fools carry on.
Cheers

surely not..
Surley if the wake from that boat caused someone to break their ribs and a boy to be washed into the river then wether they were in or out of the 8 kt zone then that to me sounds like wreckless or careless driving and I would have thought that is a criminal offence...

yep many boaters in the swan
yep many boaters in the swan dont give a sh!t. Especially some in larger boats.
Doing the rotto swim on Saturday proved this. right out the front of the left bank area. 8 knot limit, however every 2nd boat was going a lot faster, both early morningt and late afternoon. It's stupid.
The water police boat was telling kids off for fishing under the freo bridge but not doing anything about the speeding hoons in 50+ ft cruisers.

No, I don't need to have my head read.
I'm not threatening to throw lead sinkers at anyone, grab them by the throat, or punch them.
I'm not the angry dog having a loud bark behind the big tall fence of the internet either.
After all that, you're not really in any position to be commenting on common sense.

Was he definitely
Was he definitely speeding..At 8 knots is possibly the biggest wake you'll get on a boat..
Having said that if it was a million bucks worth then he's earned the right to do what ever the hell he wants really.....

wake
no offence meant or implied and condolances to the guy who was hurt but i agree with rod, my centre console 25'7 is a heavy boat with twin outboards and while not small it is certainly no 50' riviera! i was in the swan on the weekend and was showing the 3 guys and 3 kids on my boat the amount of wake i put out at 8 knots it is huge !! between 7.3 and 8.5 knots is the biggest wake i can make!! at 6 knots or 10 or above it is 1/2 what it is at 8 knots while at flat out 37knots it makes no wake at all!! i have had issues with rowing boats abusing me because of my wake but if i speed up to 10 or 12 the wake is half the size but i run the risk of a 160.00 fine! and when you have a long way to go up river you don't want to do 4 knots all the way! i don't know if other states are the same but riverbank erosion is surely worse with an 8 knot limit?? anyway i don't know the answers to this issue but this is my two bobs worth cheers

total agree ryan/rodi spend
total agree ryan/rod
i spend alot of time in the river and have also noticed my boat 21ft at 8knts is the biggest wake, 10+ and its alot smaller, but at there new limit of 5knts/idle speed up river of maylands it is almost nothing, but takes forever to go anywhere.
so i tend to stay away from that areas now.
saying all that he would be well aware of the wake he was producing and should of done something about it!!!

Maybe thats why they reduced
Maybe thats why they reduced it. Not for the wake, just to keep more people out :p.
My tinny puts out more wake at 6-8kn that it does just on planing. If the point of the speed limit is to reduce wake, it doesnt seem to be working very well when that seems to be the 'max wake speed'. No-one's going to go 5kn as 8kn is allready slow enough. Just increasing it to 12kn would help (but they could keep a clause in that you must still manage your wake, so if its smaller at 8 than 12 then its still 8 for you).

They reduce speed in relation
They reduce speed in relation to moving around in more confined areas, ie bridges, heavy boat traffic. The concern of wake is really only considered by the Swan River trust in relation to bank degeneration..

I was in the Swanfish this
I was in the Swanfish this week end, fishing about 2-3 metres from the waters edge trolling at idle speed along fresh water Bay. when a ski boat must have come within a 2 metres of us. When I called out to the boat about driving to close he replied " fish some where else".Yes it was a ski zone but that is no excuse for danerous driving. the ski boat continued to come close a further 2 times, once it appeared that they were within one metre of a near by dingy.
Another angler fishing in the near by dingy took a pic of the boat driving dangerously close to us and called the cops. they were there to have a nice chat with him when they went back to shore. "thanks mate"
It seems to me that fisho's are the most conciderate of speed and when approaching other vessels including Yak's.
I fish in yak also,
In my opinion..
If you have a big luxary boat or jet ski and not fishing, you can do what you like, stuff every one else.
I have seen it time and time again on the Swan.
I wonder how some of these people passed their skippers ticket.
Dont get me started on people merging on the freeway LOL.

haha most
i repeat most jet skiers are well dumb on there machines. i was snorkelling in magles bay. and yes i tried making myself as visible as possible. fair enough the first run he nearlly hit me i just put it down to he didnt see me i had to dive to get away. but the second third fourth fifth time started to become a joke. and to think you could talk to him good luck ( must have been from north of the river) hahahaa. he then started circling us chopping up the water. lucky we came out with a bag of crabs or i would have been pi*&ed

A couple months ago I had a big boat (named Pelican across the stern for those interested) charge between myself and a 26ft Searay. I was doing maybe 15 knots slowly going past the Searay. This bloke in his 50ft plus boat decides that the 25m in the middle of us is the perfect place to get past us both at about 25 knots. His wake was actually taller than my 20ft boat. He managed to turn me completely 180 degrees, and I am sure if my kids werent in the cabin I would have lost someone overboard. The guy in the Searay was equally unimpressed.
I was pretty livid.

I was under the impression
I was under the impression that it was illegal to fish in a ski zone. I'll stand corrected. But I agree with your comments Madfishaholic. Plenty of d/heads on the water who won't slow down. The bigger boats need to consider the wake they are producing. I remember years ago when in my old boat way up past maylands when a visting yank navy boat (launched off the ship) came screaming past us. Anyway on the way back there was a gathering of cop boats and they actually asked us to help look for a fella that had been thrown overboard (from his dinghy) by the yank boats wake. His body was found two days later. I know the ads were corny(keep the waves friendly) but they should still run them to educate the pompus arseholes in the big boats.Feel better now I've had a rant.

Not sure on the answer to
Not sure on the answer to fishing in a ski zone but it does sound dangerous though. we were right on the edge of the zone and 2 metres from the shore, not far from other moored vessels. the driver obviously thought it only for their use and no others and it is fair game to endanger the 2 fishing boats in their water.

A water ski area is just
A water ski area is just that. You can pass through but can't just drive around and your not supposed to stop and fish..
