Splicing Transducer Plugs
Gday all,
Has anybody successfully spliced a pigtail transducer to convert their transducer to furuno?
Currently got a lowrance but would like to migrate to furuno for the sounder but right now cant afford the TM260 and a 588 setup. So after some research it was suggested that I get a furuno TM260 and by a lowrance pig tail plug, cut of the plug and splice the lowrance pigtail on it, and then when I can afford the furuno head unit splice the originial back.
Apparently they only sell lowrance plug, but after some research tonight I found an airmar-033-333, 10 pin pig tail. Would this fit in the 588? Wouls make more sense just to splice once provided it works.
Im a bit nervous about cutting up a $1500 transducer cord straight out of the box.
Anyones opinion here with experience would be much appreciated before I make any expensive stuff ups.
Cheers

Lowrance
Why not buy the TM260 for the Lowrance and then cut it up when you get the Furuno? You won't have to cut it from new then!
What Lowrance sounder are you putting the TM260 with? Can it do 1Kw?

Hey zoom, i have hds 12 gen 2. The 600w 50/200 on it now detects botrom past 60m well but not fish in the 60-150m where I would like to fish.
The tech I spoke to said you can only buy lowrance plugs i.e. so you have to buy the furuno tranny to have both plugs. I found 10pin furuno plugs on line but I not 100% sure they are the right ones.

I bought a 10 pin plug that has solder ends from Taylor Marine for about $20. Fiddly but pretty easy to solder the bare wires on.

Go the mix and match way
Go the mix and match way cheaper and yes Taylor's will tell you bull dust stories that you can't get them because they will try to protect their over priced market, get on the net and check out the pricing from the US.

Mix and match transducers
Mix and match transducers come from the states although you may be able to get them locally as well. The transducers are identical except for the lead they have a short lead on the transducer which are common to all mix and match transducers you then buy a lead to suit your system. It's by far the best way to retail transducers as a retailer can hold stock of a lower number of transducers and hold leads to match the head units. I think the wholesalers over here are trying to resist and make it more difficult for consumers to change between brands. The majority of all transducers are manufactured by airmar and the manufacturers of sounders make very few transducers at all.
I have a tm260 that has been set up on 3 different head units during the time I've had it and is my backup transducer now running on a lowrance 12" touch but I can swap it over from a ss264 pair that runs on my furuno 587 in under a minute on the water if need be with the advantage of the mix and match leads. If I chose to change brand again for whatever reason I just need to by a new lead for about $80 no risk

As others have said. Buy the mix and match tranny.
I got my pair of 1kw transducers from Bonzer Marine (US) and I purchased them with the cable to suit a Lowrance head unit. When I got my Furuno I purchased a lead for the Furuno 587 from Allboats in Kingsley for under $100. I am now set up to swap between Furuno and Lowrance by just plugging in the lead.
Try Allboats, if you can't get the lead there then buy from the US.
