The lads im going up with already have the ballooning gear and have been 3-4 times before. Just want to get a heads up from a few people as whats the best gear I could use and if i need an updrade:
So far im using UglyStick 8ft, Saragosa 8000f 30lb braid with 60lb Black Magic Leader using lures

Steep Point
Gday Natho1989,
Ive been to steepy numerous times and my Penn 850SS loaded with 20lb Platypus has never let me down on me 8ft Ugly Stik.
My last trip was in March/April and the sharks were an absolute pain in the ass (spinning & balooning) so take as many lures as u can. I mainly use Rapalas 'X Rap Saltwater > Silaver Blue Mackeral, Green Gold Mackeral, Hot Head (orange) & Clown I also found the Halco 'Max 130' Pilchard, Red Head & Green a great lure (casts a mile too).
If you can manage to catch some Snook (make sure their a legal size) take many with you to use on your baloon rigs and also to bait cast along with some stotm gardies and mulies.
Also Beer, Bourbon, & Aeroguard will help. Enjoy mate its great place to experience.

GOEN FISHN, BACK WHEN I'M DAM WELL READY...

Spare line
Been a few times , your gear sounds ok for the job but i always take spare line incase you get spooled. I also take a couple spare rods and reels, there is the chance you make break something and there is no tackle shop around to get parts.
Between myself and my mates we usualy have enough spare parts , tackle , to help each other out . I know one guy that got there and all the tips were chopped of the ends of his rods ( bad packing of his gear ) We helped out with a couple spare top eyes for 2 of his rods and he was all good for his stay there.
Don't forget the cheap metal lures, ( Raiders etc ) work well too and won't break the bank if you lose a few .
Cheers Grant .

I was up there in Feburary and am going to False Entrance after Christmas.
For spinning I use a 10 foot graphite rod with a Daiwa Catalina 4500H with 30lb braid, 60lb leader and about 20 cm of single strand wire trace.
I found that the higher speed reels work better. You really want to move the lures through the water as quick as you can.
The gear you have should be OK, but a bit longer rod might help you cast a bit further and keep your line away from the cliffs a bit better.
The big bibbed minnow type lures worked the best for me. The laser pro 190s and also blue water F18s (20cm lure).
Don't get the crazy deep lures because they are too hard to wind in, 2 to 4 meter divers work well.
The barra style lures like the halco scorpions and the nil master invincibles didn't seem to swim properly at high speeds so I gave up on them.
The guys next to us were using halco max lures and caught some fish on them.
Big metal slices can also work and give you the advantage of casting further so take a couple of them too.
Also found that the white or white with red head colour worked the best and the pink/purple colours worked second best.
The type of lure and colour that works changes based on what the fish are feeding on, so take a few different lures and try them out.
If the guys around you are catching fish, swap to whatever colours they are using.
Keep the cliff gaff ready to go at all times and keep a collection of throwing rocks nearby and you should be able to beat the sharks.
The guys on balloons have further to drag the fish in and tend to get more attention from the sharks. It's a bit easier if your spinning.
It's an awesome place. Your guaranteed to have a good time.

good advice there
I like the nilsmasters but have also caught fish there on raiders and bombers either way take as many hardbodys as you can, I find rapals a bit $$ if the sharks are heavy.
take some bags you can fill with sand to hold your tent down and more than 1 hat (most people lose 1 per trip)
Shade is like gold up there so you will want some sort of arrangement
take the extra strong bushman for mossies, the flies dont bother me that much also make sure your food is mouse proof
dont forget to take to BB gear also the bottom dwellers can fire and gives you other options if the pelagics dissapear
Bitten, you will only need one 12v fridge but a tucker box and generator (reliable) are mans best friend at Steep
most importantly dont forget to take your rubbish back out with you!!

what do people generally do
what do people generally do with the fish they catch is it fillet straight away and into the freezer i imagine its to hot to leave the fish while you catch another one

hessian
depends, when the fish are running most people will chuck them on the rocks and keep going. I take hessian bags and lay the the fish in a big tub full of water and with a wet hessian bag to keep them coolish in the shade if I can. some people who just balloon and kick back fillet as they go but if your spinning also you wont want to waste time. usually the action dies off or slows down by midday so thats a good time to fillet, have a drink and something to eat.
you need a decent bucket or drum to lower down the cliff and haul water up. if you just chuck you mackie on the rocks or even in the shade it will be sand blasted (sand that smells like piss for a reason) and eaten to death by flys so just keep them cool in a hessian bag chuck a fresh bucket of water over them every 20 minutes or so.
If you can get on the actual point its about a 70m walk back to camp so do dont want to be wasting too much time with that.

More than fishing gear bring
More than fishing gear bring safety gear. My mate got washed off the rocks there a few months ago. He survived. One of the others not so lucky. If possible get a rope to anchor you up top. Have a spotter for freak swells, and wear an inflatable pfd.
But have fun, just take care is all I'm saying.

G'day a handy tip is the sand
G'day a handy tip is the sand flies are mad up their that time of the year i was up there march this year. The saving grace was the mozzie bands that you can buy at the chemist worked better than any spray for the sand flies and mossies so if you get eaten these will make the trip a whole lot more enjoyable
