steep point n march

hey guys am heading up to the point in march next year will be my first time there and i cant wait.

just a couple of questions any advice would be good

i will be spinning and bottom fishing only no balloning for me this time i am going to buy a daiwa emblem 6000 reel for spinning and need a a rod to match it too somthing reasonably light and about 10 foot i think any suggestions? i want to go for somthing that is going to give me good casting distance also with a bit of power though.

also i was thinking 30lb braid as mainline agree or disagree?

how heavy a line is good for bottom fishing there especialy in the shallow reefy areas for baldies etc..

will probably use my penn spinfisher 950 for bottom bouncing

any info would be good cheers guys

Hi Bitten

most people spin with line in the 30-50lb range at steep.  I have an emblem pro but wouldnt really want to spin with it at steep due to its size feeling a bit clumsy, not saying it cant be done just better options and the emblem pro feels better weighted with a longer rod

If your looking for a rod go to the tackleshack and have a look at the Eupro 9ft this rod is perfect for this application and a good price.

for bottom bouncing 40-50lb mono is the go so you can lift fish up from a height if you have the right rod and put the brakes on so they dont reef you and you can get them in before the taxman comes along

I know from many years of experience that i'd never venture to the point without ballooning gear as sometimes the mackies are just out of casting range and sometimes the bottom fish aren't  on and so therefore ballooning is the only viable method of connecting onto mackies. Spinning with 30lb is fine as long as you use a leader say 80lb and for bottom 50lb mono will suffice.

unfortunatly i cant really afford it with the price of the gas, balloons, suitable overhead reel etc.. saving for a house deposite sucks.

i wonder if she would notice if a couple of grand went missing out of the account after all its for a good cause.

Check out the 9ft or 10ft Lemax President Royal while you're at the Tackle Shack too, this rod is a proven winner off the Steep and Quobba rocks.  And dirt cheap for what you get.

malaga, north east of perth city.

Johnray is right about the ballooning, if you go there without the gear you will need it.  Do you know anyone that can lend you an overhead?

even if you spin you will definately need to borrow a flying gaff

Bottom bouncing off the rocks???? You could fall if you jump up and down while fishing!
