Steep Point report finally!!!!
Hi everyone here it finally is
Along with fellow forum members Johnray, Sherbert and Max199 we did a trip up to Steep point. Kicked off sunday the 16th Jan leaving sherb's house at 9pm and had a quiet trip (traffic) up to the point dodging a few roos along the way. Actually I should point out it wasnt that quiet over the 2 way with plenty of banter, Bulls%@t and innnapropriate jokes most of the way up but that is customary of many a good fishing trip.
Arriving at the point about 8am monday morning we set up camp in blistering heat and no sleep for over 24hrs and then to punish ourselves we moved camp after the spot we setup in front of proved to be too crowded. By this stage Max and I i had done all the driving we thought we might take it easy and sit down with a beverage while Ray sent out a balloon and pretty quickly had 2 spaniards on the rocks.
the following day with a 4am start had us spinning up heaps of shark mackeral, tuna and other small mackies dog's spotted etc once the sun was well and truly up the spaniards came to play smashing both lures and ballooned baits most of the day and this continued day after day what a trip.
one morning I offered to swap spots with Sherbs as we put him into isolation due to his unorthodox kamikaze ballooning technique so It started off pretty quietly for me with people hooking up all around and a 3-4m arial right in front of me and Sherbs absolutely killing it on balloon. After copping some critisism about catching 0 for the day i hooked up on a runt 7kg mackie and then noticed most of the crew were heading to the filleting table or shade as the midday sun was beating down. So I moved back to my usual spot the wind had increased to 25+ knots and I sent out a heavy semi frozen balloon bait and worked it hard only to have it smashed for no hookup and this happened another 3 times until my bait got monstered by a big angry mackie 1m out of the water and probably in the top 2 strikes I have ever seen. After about a 15 min battle i had it cliff side and gaffed by Johnray and much to my delight It was a spaniola estimated 25-28kg. After seeing this the boys were sending balloons out left right and centre and nabbed a couple more but I relaxed for the day with a beer knowing it had made my trip.
The following day the weather changed and we fished a different spot for not too much and I was 10m from spooled on a fish that liked my lure and wasnt coming back which means I probably need to think about upgrading my spin combo. Sherbs nailed a few pinkies when everyone was sleeping at 2am but there are no photos so draw your own conclusions lol we had out trip limit and didnt need them.
Higlights of the trip
Max caught the best spaniard spinning about 18kg
Me best spaniard on balloon 25-28kg
Johnray attempting the world landbased game record time on a 10kg long tail tuna....... It punished him for about 45 minutes
Cupcake most sleep on the trip.
Sherbs for nearly getting spooled on a 50tw by a fish that was called for a mackie but turned out to be a NW blowie
Johnray and Max for the gorrillas in the mist re-enactment (shower time on the cliff)
Johnray for filleting everything on his custom made filleting table
These are some photos I am allowed to use by sherbs as he has bigger plans for the good quality ones so I apologise for any blood, poor quality etc

I said the 17 tailor thing was only a bit of gee-up. If I really wanted to stir, I would ask how well can you release a bunch of unwanted sharkies, tuna, spotties and doggies, plus excess spanish and snapper after gaffing/snigging them to the top of a 20 m cliff, and if its OK to keep fishing like this once you have your trip limit.....

Fellas sounds like you had a ball and all caught some great fish,
You make it look easy but the organising involved to make it happen and to be succesfull at the some time is a credit to all involved.
Well done, are you planning on going again next year ?

When we arrived there was a group of six at the point who wanted the oven exclusively, so as the rule at steep is first in first served, we complied with their request although as everyone knows the oven is for EVERYBODYS use as a spinning platform but we figured that in front of the camp would be much more suited to our needs. So we basically spun and ballooned from in front of the camp and did just as well if not better than the guys killing themselves throwing lures all day.Rig nailed a 25 kegger and max landed one about 17kg on a fluoro bomber's treble in its arsehole. We will be booking a trip for next year soon (Max we'll call you) and fishos it was the day of the full moon when the mackies went crazy on balloon so disregard at the bs about new moon/full moon theories. My theory is that if a mackie is cruising by and it sees a lure or balloon bait skipping it will have a go no matter what.

If you see the harness he was wearing that blowie nearly pulled him and the rod in the water lol
and somehow in the fight it damaged the ugly stick rod he was using so when he got a genuine mackie "SNAP" lucky they have a warranty
Just a note to all people going to Steep take your rubbish home with you they only accept ally cans and shit in the toilet not all over the point. There was a group of animals camped right next to us and people like them will get the place closed down for the other 99% of us

yeah yeah
hey Yakker
I landed heaps of mackies on this combo, more than max hence he was calling me action man lol. Its my usual outfit spinning for tailor the rod is a daiwa whiskey spinner which is designed for salmon fishing in scotland and I got it given to me when it was confiscated in UK customs brand new. Really $$$$ rod with great action but not enough power to turn bigger fish. My reel is just a penn applause 8000 spooled with 50lb fins braid. The reel is ok but I have thrashed it and something with a bit more drag and a bit smoother would be better. If your looking for a combo for that style of fishing it doesnt have to be expensive 850 penns are regularly used by anglers on a budget and are more than up to the task just get a rod that can cast the lures a mile with a litle bit of balls in the bottom. Max got a new combo for the trip and his rod was about $170 OZOGA or OKUMA I cant remember which 1 but oceanside have them I had a look at 1 the other day aswell as having a few casts with his.
with the reel side of things I wouldnt go less than a 6000 reel for more line capacity I could have turned that fish if i had another 100m of line so on the off chance you get a biggy you need as much line as you can get and dont use less than 30lb braid off the rocks I dont care what anyone says

that combo should be fine
that combo should be fine yakker not sure about the rod as i havent seen it but thats the thing with fishing there is always a better combo to upgrade 2 just has to flick lures as far as possible, my combo caught fish but you never know what you could hook up on out there massive tuna, YTK, big trevally and huge mackies are always a possibility not to mention sailfish and marlin on balloon one things for sure if you dilly dally getting a fish in the sharks will tax you. My balloon combo is interesting the rod cost me $20 online solid fibreglass and it did evrything i wanted hopefully i can afford to upgrade that soon maybe to a live fibre. my balloon reel it a penn international 30tw winch 80lb braid and mono. I also use another combo for spinning metals up there a saltist 6500 spooled 50lb braid and a sylphy hearty rise 8'11 20kg that combo is heavey and can really put the brakes on any fish.
Vince i hear what your saying with the tailor but I can chase them around here and up to sbend when in steep with the mackies prolific I prefer to get my arms stretched. There is good ground down the west coast but you really want easterly winds it blows southerly all day up there this time of year.
If an old man falls off a cliff in the middle of the night would anyone care lol just joking sherbs. Colin his photo was taken after a few to many ciders he was laying on the ground with the fish. I think Sherbs invited you first but we had to settle for 3rd or 4th best Max

The gun bait is storm gardies but tailor, bull herring, mullet or anything about this size will do
