Stolen Boat Trailer - Belmont Ramp

A 3 month old boat trailer got stolen today from Belmont ramp, whilst the poeple were out on the boat.

Apparently others were stolen from Pt Peron and Woodies this past week.

What is the world coming too?

I only just bought a hitch lock today, thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea while in the carpark. Certain parts of the community live with the belief, if it's not bolted down its free.

You would be totally pissed.  Unfortunately there are some out there that think they can take what they like. This sort of thing will just keep happening.

Even those hitch locks won't deter them , they just take a bit longer

I've had a trailer stolen while I was fishing a late night tide change. It was no fun at all.

 Drove to mates house. Tied

Mon, 2022-01-03 07:31

Drove to mates house. Tied the transom of his boat to a tree. Pull the trailer out from underneath. Drive to ramp. Sucked pretty bad early hours of the morning.

I dare say the car or plates

Mon, 2022-01-03 08:23

I dare say the car or plates they used would be stolen too. All cameras do is give a grainy account of what happened

Some bloody nice trailers

Mon, 2022-01-03 08:03

Some bloody nice trailers getting around the ramps ATM. I was looking at a few designs and used a few ideas for my 5.8 build.

but yes would suck having no trailer when back at ramp.

Mon, 2022-01-03 09:09

Happened to a mate of mine at Rockingham a few years ago. It was the first outing for the completely rebuilt, refurbished trailer, Went out , came back. Gone. You can only hope karma exists.

Don’t under estimate organised picking to order.

You may not be able to hand out a flogging to the low life doing the stealing, had a mate have his new 7 m trailer taken as new about 6 years ago. From a East Freo club car park. Low act,

tracker?

Mon, 2022-01-03 17:08

Bit of a worry, given I have a new trailer. Thinking about wheel clamp now, which is a bit of a pain and slows things down, as I go solo and try to be quick getting my car back down to the boat at the ramp for retrieval .Might attach a tracker I have to it, as an alternative.  Would love to catch these guys and tie them to the trailer like a rack, while I go fishing for the day.

 My understanding is that

My understanding is that insurance won't cover a stolen trailer if it was left hitched to the car and without a wheel clamp.

Covered

Mon, 2022-01-03 17:44

Agree with Sunshine. A quick check of insurers websites indicates the car comprehensive insurance provides cover as long as the trailer is attached. Example of the sort of insurer statement below, which was on the AAMI site, but RAC and others all similar;

"Two-wheel trailers attached to your car are covered by comrehensive car insurance. As long as it’s attached to your car when the incident happens, we pay up to $1,000 for accidental damage. Theft of your attached trailer is also covered."

Nope

Mon, 2022-02-07 21:46

Boat trailers aren't covered under car insurance, only box/garden/luggage type. Also limited to 2 wheeled trailers.

Would be interested in understanding 'market value' of a boat these days too.... I'm considering getting mine valued, just to keep it on record - just in case.

Have never seen that in my policy, they only stipulate a hitch lock when it's garaged.

And just be careful as car insurance on trailers

Mon, 2022-01-03 19:01

Provides very little cover .....usually limited to around two grand and specifically limited to single axle box or garden type trailers NOT boat trailers......due to boat trailers higher value they should be specified under your boat insurance coverage.

  In addition to the above

Tue, 2022-01-04 15:00

In addition to the above comment re insurance, make sure your boat/trailer insurance has plenty of recovery cover. Our trailer took a dump just south of Cervantes (How we didn't lose the boat I will never know). It had be taken to Jurien for assessment. Would've cost $1100 Jurien to Duncraig but for our cover. The same goes for your car as well. It may cost a bit extra but if you only use it once it will be worth it, believe me.

 We also lost our trailer

Sun, 2022-01-09 18:53

We also lost our trailer last Sunday from the belmont ramp :-(

Did u place a police report?

There was a witness & as of 3 days ago he still hadn't heard from the police or the insurance company.

 Always thought I was

Mon, 2022-02-07 18:49

Always thought I was paranoid but I run a slightly longer chain and a decent padlock on another link aswell as the d shackle to the tow kit, also put a padlock on hitch so it can't be lifted.

I have a hitch helmet on mine

Mon, 2022-02-07 22:09

I have a hitch helmet on mine which will hopefully be enough of a deterrent. It also saved my arse coming home from Albany when I didn’t drop the towball clip down, it would have jumped off the towball for sure
