Suitable Car to small boat.

I have a Quintrex 480 Freedom Sport.  At present we use a v8 Caprice to tow it and this does it very easily.

We are looking at getting a smaller car in the next six months and I want to make sure it will be alright to tow the boat.  At times we take the boat to Dongara or Esperance.

The car we are favouring at the moment is a Peugeot 407 wagon, 2L diesel.

Does anyone know if this will be suitable to tow the boat?

firstly

why?

secondly, I think they tow about 1.5T from memory, so it would be getting close to its limit I reckon once you fill the tank, rods, reels, tackle etc but you should be right.

Why a smaller car?

Because its too big and its a pain in the ass.  We got a caprice because of the space in the back for the kids but my oldest is 17 and the next turns 16 next week so they will driving themselves rather than me.

I have never really liked the car either, although nice when you get out into the country.

Mark i tow my 480 coast runner same motor etc with a 2l kia sportage petrol. It struggles a bit but i only tow locally.

I suggest something with at least 2.5lt motor if you are travelling distances. Perhaps nissan Xtrail??

BOAT WEIGHT

Thu, 2009-09-17 08:08

Mark , i would take your boat down to a local weigh bridge and find out exactly what the true total weight of your rig is, most council tips do it for free, then you will know the exact weight you have to tow, plus gear you would throw in for the day as Huggy said , you would be amazed at how much your gear weighs, i added up my rig recently and was about 400 kgs low

Thu, 2009-09-17 09:35

great idea, I didn't know where I would find a weighbridge but I will give the South Perth Council a call and check if they have one.

Will also have to allow extra as obviously not towing a trailer so all the extra goes into the boat for a long trip.

I found this on a few UK

Thu, 2009-09-17 09:58

I found this on a few UK sites.

What's the maximum weight I can carry in my trailer?

Trailer has no brakes (Unbraked Trailer)

  • Maximum 750kg gross trailer weight or half the towing vehicle's kerb weight - whichever is less.

The usual definition of kerb weight is a vehicle in its ready to use condition with all tools, spare wheel etc. and a full tank of fuel. Many vehicle manufacturers are, however, now following European Directive 95/48/EC which specifies the kerb weight as a car in ready to drive condition with the fuel tank 90% full, a driver on board weighing 68 kg and luggage of 7 kg.

Another public weigh bridge in Guilford (across the road from Guilford Grammar).  Only about $10 and you get a printout.

Cheers Pete

  Peugeot 470 2l

Thu, 2009-09-17 14:34

Peugeot 470 2l diesel

Maximum 750kg gross trailer weight or half the towing vehicle's kerb weight - whichever is less

Power kW:100

Torque Nm:320

 rpm for maximum torque 2000

I would have to assume that the boat, trailer and motor etc weigh in at undr 750kg or they would not be able to sell unbraked.  I will get it weighed though.

Based on that the car should be able to tow it, what I was after was if anyone had any idea of what it would be like towing it.  As I said I find a big difference between the VT commodore and the v8 Caprice.

Executive sedan with V6 (kg): 1551 Maximum torque: 304 Nm @ 3600 RPM

Statesman Caprice: 1719kg Torque: 428.8Nm at 3500rpm

Peugeot 407 wagon - kerb weight 1797 kg

BAsed on this I would expect the Peugeot to tow the boat at least as well as the commodore VT, which I thought struggled a little.

(PS I have a commodore VT and is one fo the vehicles I am planning to sell, too many cars and too big).

My Dad just got a Kia Sorento TD and it tows 2.8T!!!! Bloody amazing for a little car. I would imagine pretty much any TD over 2.0L will have enough torque to haul a little ali boat.

Never driven the Peugot diesel but from experience with Euro TD's you'll hardly notice it is there.

I just got back from France

Thu, 2009-09-17 22:46

I just got back from France and drove a 308 2L diesel all over the place,.  Apart from the fuel economy I would not have known it was a diesel.  The fuel economy was great but no idea what it was when you can cruise at 150 on  the highway and at times 170+.

My view of diesels has totally changed from the old lc diesels.

weight of yammie 60 4stroke

should be around 110-115kg

not sure where the 181 kg comes from apart from maximum transom weight but this does not indicate the motor weight of the 60.

Mark suprised you thought

Thu, 2009-09-17 21:38

Mark

suprised you thought the VT struggled a liitle as I had been towing my glass boat around with my VX V6 on a few long trips (VS prior to that also) and managed 100km/hr reasonably easy. My boat is an older boat and quite a heavy hull for the size, never weighed it but I have no doubt it would top a tonne plus once loaded for a trip.  Next trip will be easier as just bought a VZ V8 recently and just need to chuck a tow bar on it.

That being said the V6 would feel like it's struggling compared the the V8 Caprice.  Would think the Peugeot would match the VT V6 particularly given the diesels (in general) are better at towing than petrol driven motors (better torque particularly lower down in the rev range)

Cheers

Paul

hi Paul From what I have

Thu, 2009-09-17 22:42

hi Paul

From what I have been reading the towing seems to be related to severla things.  The most obvious is whether or not the trailer is baraked or unbraked.

Regarding the vehicle to tow the boat, there seems to be two factors; the ability/torque of the engine and the weight of the car.

The Peugeot seems to have better torque and weight more than the VT so it should have no trouble towing the boat.

Regarding the VT vs Caprice.  The VT did tow it without any trouble but you did feel it on the vehicle, you were always aware you were towing something.  It also affected the overtaking ability of the car.

With the caprice I can accelerate up a reasonably steep hill to about 140kmph very briskly something the VT certainly couldn't do.  It seems to run out of staeam at 140, I can certainly easily overtake another vehicle without any worries.  Also, I dont really notice the boat being towed  apart from the fuel consumption; around 20 l/100km.

From what I havre been able to find of the peugeot 308 or 407 2L specs it should be able to tow the boat slightly better than the vt - go the diesel :)

Towing your boat

Fri, 2009-12-25 06:30

There are a couple of things to remember when towing a trailer with front wheel drive.

One is that "going" is not that important, its stopping that hurts. The trailer must have good brakes, I have only had a trailer jack-knife once, be it on a gravel road, but very quick, very frightening. I would guess that most boat trailers have brakes in name only.

You will probably need a towing hitch to get the vehicle balance right, you are disscussing a front wheel drive I assume.

I tow with a 3 lt Magna, very cheap to buy, tows well, and have been thinking of a all wheel drive Magna, petrol bill goes up though.

But dont forget its more important to be able to stop. Lights, unexpected hazards etc.
