Surf rig that doesn't tangle?

Had a proper beach fishing session last night wich was fun as ive caught a couple of tailor upto 40cm.

i did find that i have spend a lot of time getting my lines out of tangles for a fair bit.

setup I've just: main line | swivel | leader about 40cm | 3 way swivel | 50 cm leader onto a gang of hooks

and from the other end of the 3 way swivel i got 20 cm to a snap swivel with a 4oz star sinker

obviously it rolls around in the surf a lot and am looking to improve my rigs and with that my fishing.

any recommendations?

maybe a twisted dropper knot?

want to spend less time tangling and more time fishing ;-)

all on mono btw

 Have a swivel running on

Sun, 2015-11-29 13:40

Have a swivel running on your main line with about 15-20cm leader(lighter than your main line) to a star sinker to suit the conditions. To your main line, attach a swivel with about a meter of leader with your gang.

After you have cast out, reel in until there is tension. This rig does tangle somtimes, but it's better than any other rig I've tried, plus you get the advantage of having the running sinker if you are targeting mullys. Just make sure you check the rig regularly if you have it in a rod holder because any rig will tangle if it's left under the water long enough.

Was thinking about a sliding sinker on one of those tubes that slide across your line aswell

cheers for that

Where is it tangling?

Sun, 2015-11-29 13:50

if it's the sinker wrapping up, try shortening the length of leader on it or even get rid of that length altogether and just clip sinker to three way swivel

Depending upon factors such as swell, current, wind, thickness of main line, size of bait and thickness of leader, you may wish to go up to a five or six ounce sinker to stop the roll.

Make sure your bait is streamlined so it doesn't wash around in current as much. Eg cut tail off mulies and trim sides of fillet baits.

Switch to a running sinker rig or standard paternoster if you can't get this to work.

Good to see you are catching though the rig you use clearly works!

Ill give it a go next time, but yes tangles around the sinker.

was with a good swell, lot of wind, 20 lb main, 30lb leader, will pick up some heavier sinkers aswell i suppose, had the incoming tide aswell.

but at least was catching ;-) no tails on the mullies

Don't use them running sinker clips

Sun, 2015-11-29 13:50

i find if you use them plastic sinker clips, they don't allow you to cast out very far. They tend to not stay with the bait as it flys off. Using a swivel and a bit of leader solved that problem for me.

Alright i will stay away from those then ;-)

i will clip the sinker directly to the 3 way swivel and maybe use a heavier sinker

For Tailor

Sun, 2015-11-29 15:38

For Tailor, I just keep it simple with a dropper rig.

Otherwise, as said above you can use a IMP clip, attach the sinker of choice and probaly a Pulley rig is the simplest way to rig up.

Here is a link with a short explanation of how it works.

youtu.be/eJzOYkNtkOo

You can search for more info on the rig. He explaines the pully bead used, but they are not common in OZ , so just use a swivell instead.

I usualy dont have as long on the leader to the hooks as in the video. Just make sure you put a bead each side of the running swivel to protect your knots, and the rule for the rig is , The leader for the hooks has to be shorter than the leader to the sinker or clip. This will make sure the weight of the sinker pulls down on the baited hooks and holds the rig togeather for casting.

Get it right and you can cast alot further and baits dont spin around in the air during the flight af the cast. And as shown, the sinker comes up high on the retreive preventing it grabbing so much on rocks and weed etc .

Sun, 2015-11-29 16:17

On your dropper rig, do you use the dropper loop to attach the gang of hooks or the sinker?

as you state lower keep the line for the hooks shorter than for the sinker?

just want to make sure i do the right thing jn the most effective way

What i use

Sun, 2015-11-29 17:09

Alot of guys might not agree, but this is what i use. But I put a smaller hook on the bottom with a bit of squid as bait, this will hook Herring, whiting, skippy etc.

Then on the top loop I use a 2 x hook gang, with half a mulie or strip of fish bait. That way I am searching out areas and not restricted to just targeting one species.

Just make sure the loops are large enough to get the hooks you want on the rig,

Or you can make smaller loops and have pre made hooks tied on with loops at the end of the leader, then loop to loop conection. This alows you to change hook sizes or change out damaged leaders without retying the whole rig .

I run a single dropper with a trebled gang. Works great for tailor and have caught heaps of soapies as a by-catch.

Thanks for that, sounds pretty good.

What about breakaway sinkers? As we used them a lot in holland? Don't know what people's opinion is on this over here

Mon, 2015-11-30 13:37

My prime comment would be stay away from a 3 way swivel. I fished constantly at Kalbarri for years and the only rig I ever used was a swivel say 300mm of 60lb trace with a running sinker another swivel and 300mm of trace again to a gang hook. You can reach a point where the sinker becomes to heavy and you loose feel on the line. Additionally I have never liked those South African surf sinkers very much. Firstly they cost too much but perhaps more so if there are any mulloway around you don't stand a chance with those sinkers.
Last comment, perhaps a lumo bead before the second swivel so the sinker doesn't get locked up on the knot.

Cheers for that peko. But what kind of running sinker would you use? As you require quite heavy ones for in the surf? And how would you attach them to your line?

A star sinker that has a "lead" moulded eye in the top. Don't use the type that have a swivel moulded into them as they invariably break off after a few casts. The weight and size is very dependant on conditions but at Kalbarri I would probably fish with about 4oz.

Mon, 2015-11-30 16:18

mate keep it simple use one of those plastic tube running sinker set ups on yr main line usually with a star sinker on the clip.then a barrel swivel with about 40 cm of trace then a set of gangs. If your trace is to long you won't get any distance with your cast so watch that. If it's heavy surf or strong wind use a dropper style rig with a star sinker or wire surf sinker on the bottom try a surf popper on the top loop and gangs on the bottom. I like the first rig best because the running sinker offers less resistance when the fish hits better for mulloway best of luck

Missing an important tip here, snip the tail off your mulie. It will cast better and won't flutter in the breeze as its being cast out and hindering your distance.
