Surf/Rock Rod

Just looking for some advice on new gear selection. Am chasing a new rod for surf/rocks , mainly Wagoe type fishing however also for use up at Quobba. Using a Penn 950 (usa model , but new) but this might be changed down the track to a saltiga once I get rid of the Penns (have 3 of them).

Currently using old Snyder (about 15ft but cant remember as had it rebuilt by Rodwise so cant remember how many wraps or size etc as it was covered over) but thinking of moving to graphite or composite for comfort (weight) and something a bit stiffer to get me up an out of the jags quicker).

Looking at Moonraker, Wilson Live Fibre or perhaps Daiwa Senor, around the 14ft mark.

Any suggestions on the above or any others. Price wise am happy to fork out up to $400.

Cheers

grunt to lift anytyhing big up to anywhere where you are fishing high. But if you want to cast a mile, then they are the go. The LiveFibre's have the grunt for that sort of work.

hey mate, i have the sensor surf, great rod, casts a country mile with no effort, i have the expedition on it and recently went to wagoe with it. its got pretty awesome power, its the 2-6oz rod so i was casting out 5oz sinkers with a herring no prob. only prob was the saltiga didn't give the fish much of a chance, i'l prob look at a surf or something smaller like a 4500, otherwise its like using a snapper winch on sand whiting for fishing metro area...

Not often one needs a 14/15

Not often one needs a 14/15 foot rod. With your budget you're getting close to prices asked of higher quality rods than the brands you mention.  I note that Ranger Camping in Ossie Pk has one heavy Assassin left but is $600. Otherwise he has Blue Marlin rods. Joe will push the Loomis & Franklin brand and the advantage here is that I think it includes 3 tips, light medium & heavy. I think they're cheaper than the Assassin to boot. You'll not need another rod. Campbells have Purglass and one of the 400 rods will suit you. The Purglas blanks are about $200-$300 but not sure what they are made up. These are all fully graphite.

Thanks Ken

Did a fair bit of research before hand .

Ended buying the Loomis. My fishing usually requires 14ft (when I fish surf,i mean surf) and need lenght to be able to clear reef edge when standing.

Spent last week up at wagoe chalets and although swell / wind was heavy, used the heavy tip for 90% of time. When swell dropped changed to med tip and picked up three pinkies on my last day. Very happy with the action etc of the rod. Much better response than the old Snyder 9 wrap and in those types of conditions, much better on the back and arms .

And it covers a number of fishing options. I like the sound of that.
