Swan flathead

A quick session along southern flats this morning, for just the one small but pretty little fish that went back.

But I keep having problems getting snagged, so I'm hoping someone might tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Lost three lures this morning, all of which I only just got this week. One 1/8 TT blade, one damiki vault and one MX40.

The ground there is not that bad I just keep finding rock. I went with the heavier lures cause the wind made it hard to get smaller minnows out.

But that's $40 of new lure gone on just over an hour. Fishing is expensive the way I do it clearly.

Anyone give me any suggestions on how to refine my technique? May try and get back out Sunday again if anyone else is interested.

you can try the w hooks as an alternative to trebles, they face upwards and are less likely to snag.

Yeah I will give that more

Fri, 2011-12-16 12:45

Yeah I will give that more of an effort. The Vault I lost had w-hooks though. Maybe I just got unlucky there. I lost the MX40 the cast after I had landed that fish. And I lost the blade after hooking another and having to stuff around with the drag I'd forgotten to tighten a few moments earlier.

Trial and error I suppose.

yeah i don't bother with them as I use mainly crank and jerk baits not vibes, but its just a suggestion that might improve things.

 Ordered a handful of lures

Fri, 2011-12-16 13:07

Ordered a handful of lures online last week that arrived a couple of days ago. Won't mention the site cause I'm not sure they're affiliated here. I did order a an Atomic Crank but I guess they were out of stock. Also got a Damiki crankbat but after losing two lures I didn't want to put on another new one and risk it.

just unlucky, i geuss if thats the ground you choose to fish over then you might lose a few lures, maybe invest in a lure retreiver, they only cost about $15 or so and all it needs to do is rescue one lure and its done its job

Just google "tackleback". You can get them or similar items at most tackle stores. If you want to fish rocky ground then I suggest switching to braid (if your not already using it) & doing most of your fishing with slightly larger floating minnows. With the braid you will be able to feel it the moment the lure makes contact with a snag & you can drop the rod tip immediately to give some slack line. That will allow the lure to float up & over the rock/snag so you can continue winding in. Lures like the Scorpion 52 & Manns 5+ are great for that sort of thing. Flatties like the bigger lures & they have enough weight to cast them comfortably even into a decent wind.

Yeah using braid. I think I just need to work on my finesse and feel. Bugger I just bought a Scorpion 35. Knew I should have bought the 52. Did buy a Poltergeist 50 the other day though. Pretty similar though?

The Poltergeist has a much wider sway than the Scorpion which is good because that means you can work it slower but I personally havn't found it to be as effective on the flatties as the Scorpion. I actually didn't bother to replace my last Poltergeist when I lost it. That said I have taken a few flatties on them over the years so they will still work. Nothing wrong with the Scorpion 35's if they are worked carefully. The floating ones will still rise over an obstacle, you just need to refine your touch a little more like you mentioned.

I guess I will need to spend more time on the water. Oh woe is me!

Anyone keen for a session Sunday? I'm actually thinking the Como flats cause I need to go see a mate around there in the morning.

But after that... it will be lines in the water!

going to be heading to point res on saturday morning for a flick. Sounds like similar ground to where your fishing, with plenty of rocks and weed. Hopefully ill get a few keepers for lunch, last time most of the flatties were barely legal

Used to be a hardbodys fan for flatties till i discovered soft plastics was where it at, theres no need for high end lures to be honest as long as it can get you in the strike zone it will get smashed.

Soft plastics are fantastic

Sat, 2011-12-17 08:56

Soft plastics are fantastic on flatties Dicey but more often than not the tails get chewed by the blowies within a couple of casts & they become useless. Going through a couple of packs of tails each session & leaving with no tails left is false economy. I'd rather spend $20 on a hardbody & still have it at the end of the session. No doubt there are times & places where the blowies don't make an appearance & the sp's are the way to go but unfortunately myself (& most others) find those times to be rather rare. If they are working for you without being blowied though, good luck to you you lucky bugger. Your correct that there's no need for high end lures though, I'm happy throwing Laser Pro 45's, Scorpions, Crappie Jigs etc around & I get my fair share of flatties.

Garret, Point Resolution is the point at the eastern most part of Freshwater Bay, directly opposite Point Walter. There's a little road into the carpark just off Jutland Parade in Dalkieth then all you have to do is walk down the steps to the river. There's good flats all the way from the point itself around to Claremont Jetty.

Graeme, heres a tip. If your tail gets clipped by a blowie, keep throwing the placcy around. I have had a 50cm+ flatty take the tiniest bit of pink powerbait after the blowies took to it.

Yeh the tails do get wrecked

Sat, 2011-12-17 11:44

Yeh the tails do get wrecked quite easily, upsize the jighead and work it faster flatties swim pretty fast, Graeme76 i use to think like that about false economy on hardbody vs softplastics thats how i ended up with so many lures(hardbody) but now realise i was wrong lol.

 I have been using plastics

Sat, 2011-12-17 14:36

I have been using plastics as well, but yeah they do get hit by blowies pretty bad. Also I snagged one of them too, so clearly I am actually just useless at fishing.

Last week I was using 5in soft minnows and got a couple of follows from flatties so I am confident they work.

Been busy with other stuff today so planing to get out tomorow. Como, Bicton or thereabouts. But anywhere is good I reckon.

Sat, 2011-12-24 22:04

never had much luck with the larger type lures as suggested, recently bought some ecogear sx40's (usually just use laser pro 45 or scorpion 35) and today had about 30 blowies nailing one, as i was about to lift it out the water a 35cm flatty barrelled them out the way at my feet and nailed it, was unreal to see! in the past the old white feathered jig was dynamite, i assume they still  work. maybe take some goggles with you next time prop ya rod on shore follow ya line and retrieve your lures?? and dont cast to the same spot next time.
