Canning bridge, Old swan brewery, Narrows, E-Shed, the list goes on. All pretty popular spots. Otherwise just cruise around and look for holes/gutters or likely looking dropoffs near sandbars and that. Look for heaps of baitfish.
are they good eating in rivers? never caught river one...never tried,,,i thought this time off year they go in sound unsure>?...i still recon they are the most underated fish in waters ...my wife and kids prefer them to dhues and balds and pinks...great fish ...good chewing.....
Mate, get yourself a log book.. draw up a couple hundred hours worth of fishing time! and starting doing your research!
now depending on how you want to target them!
Live baiting (most popular)
Use the bait in the area your fishing.. you need to catch live bait..
IE : tailor at the narrows.. or boneys down the lower reachers! even trumpeys & Grunters
Snell a couple of Gamagatsu 5/6 - 6/0 occy hooks with no more than 60lb leader... (id go 60-90cm) to a swivel & a running ball sinker!
personally I like to use overhead reels, with a rachet & cast control.. the shimano trinidad 16n is a great mulloway reel.. casts a mile.. got a rachet & fits a good 300+meters of braid! pe3 anyway!
you want to be finesse as possible so dont try & use a heavy sinker.. just enough to keep the live bait on the bottom!
they're are MILLIONS of different success stories on the tides & moon phases.. which you will find on this site if you do a search on it!
I like to fish 2hours before & after high tide on a new moon.. but i will fish any moon or tide just to get out of the house!
just put in the hours.. talk to the people in the area.. ive had many a great yarn around the bridges late at night with fellow mulloway chasers.. most of all have fun.. your gonna have to spend alot of time ( TRADITIONALLY ) to catch one
but I know people who have caught them 1st and 2nd time out!
you can also target them on fly.. usually a 8wt or 10wt should be fine... using a bunch of chartousse flies.. with a alot of flash! I havent fly fished for mulloway in a very long time! and I never caught one
but I will tell you I have seen people catch them on fly & its very exciting.. all caught on chartousse looking flies.. you want to try & imitate a bony herring or a green back tailor! if you got a bit of time
to learn & learn the art of fly fishing! it is gotta be the most exciting form of mulloway fishing! infact any fishing I believe!
check out the saltwater fly fishing websites around.. so much info and alot of great fishers!
anyway mate! all the best, good luck & dont be dissapointed if you dont catch one for the first 6months - 12months of fishing! some people have being chasing them for YEARS! including myself!

Somewhere with bait fish,
Somewhere with bait fish, baitfish like hangin around lights, use them as bait, live
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.
