Swan Night Dive Video - June 2010

Home sick today, so I had a chance to upload the night dive that I did a few weeks ago with Gully, Till, Tim and a few others.

6 hours to upload!!!!....time for bed.

Gully features as the first diver 'attacking' the prawns in the first part.  It was funny as, what with him loosing the prawn and the 'piss-off' wave of his torch.  Later I filmed myself catching prawns and a few crabs to give Gully time to himself.

Hope you all enjoy...more to come later.

Mate - that footage is brilliant! What kind of camera are you using? Very well edited too! Having dived that spot myself a few times it is amazing what is on the bottom of the swan there huh? Good to see the tip about using a clip on the bag end of the prawn net too.

Gotta say though, my last swan dive was a couple of months ago now and you guys certainly have balls getting in there now!! What is it down there now 11-12 degrees?

Also some of those close up shots were sensational - did you have strobes for lighting?

Matt: just a good semi-dry

Tue, 2010-07-06 07:49

Matt: just a good semi-dry 5mm, it did hurt a little this week though, forgot my hood and that stung a little on the way down and I could really feel it when I got back out this time.

Goodz: I swore there weren't yabbies down there, but no idea what else it could be. I saw a couple myself on the last dive.

Ta for the credit Pete, I think you see my torch beam in the jetty shot and thats about it for me ;)

Thanks for the comments

Tue, 2010-07-06 07:55

Thanks for the comments people and glad you enjoyed it.  As a few have said, it is great to be able to show what is down there.....a good visual reminder of why we need to look after the Swan and other river systems.

The fish catcher is a type of anemone and yes it was a case of 'right time, right place' to see him catch dinner.  This one would have tentacles about 30 cm long and a few thick.  Any bigger and they would thin out the divers!

There are plenty more critters down there that will spin you out.  I have some good footage from my first dive in the river with this camera...I'll do a few more dives soon and then edit up some more stuff.

I use a canon HV-20 which is a HD dv tape camera and this is mounted in an Ikelite housing which has a wide angle glass attached.  Light is from a UK Light Canon torch with a light disperser which is mounted onto the handle of the housing (hmm, I should get a pic of the setup).

I don't normally use a clip when prawning (but had to here whilst holding the camera), I think it would waste too much time.

WIll give you a call Shabba (I'll be out for the rest of the week with this bloody head cold though)...so early next week most likely.

Goodz - Hmm, looks like some sort of Marron...maybe Gully can enlighten us?

Cheers Brad, Hunters are great!  And yeah, crab on jelly - new to me, that one.

Yeah, editing does take some time but it is fun and the result is worth it.
Nic might get a feed of some of those big bad boys soon!  I'll take a pic for you Soupy....just to rub it in more.  Now you shoot off and catch some more doggies, sails, mud crabs...yeah, yeah, rub it in.
Haha, you were there Til.  That counts.  Wish I got you on film catching that horse of a squid though.  Yeah, need some socks for the next dive..starting to get chilly.

Cheers Pete

The vid really came up a treat. Was nice of me to show how 'not' to catch a prawn dont you think? Pissed myself over that - was a classic.

Will let you know how we go tonight braving the freezing cold :P

Great vid brings back

Tue, 2010-07-06 17:04

Great vid brings back memorys of Bicton Baths and another spot at Mossie bay of the beach.

For anybody who is getting into it a little hint,,don't use your prawn net to catch a crab,it will make a pigs breakfast out of your net and its a bugger to get them out,,lol

Great vid. One thing I miss

Thu, 2010-07-08 07:48

Great vid. One thing I miss about Perth is the night dives in the swan.

The swan really comes to life at night. It amazing how many different creatures you see.
