Abrolhos trip

Am setting up the boat for some trips to Rotto and the Abrolhos. I have a 6.35 haines centre cab with 200hp honda I hold 210lt of fuel .To do a two day three night trip from Gero how much extra fuel would be needed.I think I would get there and back on 140lt so was thinking if i took 140lt of extra fuel that would be enough,We will be diving and fishing ,any advice from those that have done the trip before would be greatfull.

Other people I know that dive were doing 120nm per trip, so I guess you need to budget on 180nm using thirds. They don't move around much though, perhaps that helps with their mileage?

Cans

Live in Gero and do the trip often, take a few extra cans just incase the weather goes down hill or you decide to troll. Fuel is not available on the islands and the island boats dont like taking it over for ppl anymore.

carry an extra 200. if you dont use it then it can go in the car. better to have too much than not enough, not as if its going to go to waste and the extra 220 kg wont make much diff to the boat handling. just got to pick the time right as the weather can turn it nasty out there

I was thinking of doing a trip that way too Paul. My partner and i are off to Bali this coming Wednesday and we are back the following Wed. Then we both have work off for another 4days so i was thinking of going for a fish that way. Ive never been north of Perth fishing just south. So do you drive to gero and launch there and drive out to the islands? How far is it? Not sure my boat would be big enough its a 4.7m but overall 5m. Any info from anyone would be a massive help

Thanks everyone

great question paul.

on my memory map , i drew a 200 nautical mile trail that distance wise would see you a good look around pelsaert and easter group.

what that equates to in fuel tho???

be very interested to know

I think from memory, my trip a couple of yrs ago, i used around the 350l of fuel for a 4 day trip & stay over there. However we did travel a huge distance around the islands.

you have to take it all Paul

Fri, 2010-07-23 21:04

you have to take it all Paul as there's no getting out on the islands. The closest group is the Pelsaert and this is around 35nm from Gero. I'd allow at least 20nm a day travelling as a minimum (you don't need to travel this far by any means but it's nice to have the fuel to allow you to if you want). By the time you take some extra jerries, swags, fishing and dive gear, eskies, food and water it'd be a pretty full boat but still very do-able, just need to work around your gear. A couple of members are out there as I type so they might be able to shed some light on it when they get home. All my trips have either been on bigger boats or staying at a shack.
It'll pay to check Fisheries rules too with regards to bag and possession limits and filletting at sea without landing.

Paul i do the trip every year but on a big boat we hire IMO i wouldnt bother going to the northern group because the distance isnt worth the reward there is plenty of great diving and fishing in the middle groups and southern groups as for fuel im not sure  and as Tim said check the rules i dont think you can take crays on scuba there at all and the bag limits on fish when we go is half the bag limit we get down here in the metro there are also speicies bans at certain times of the year we usually go in Oct

yeah forgot to mention the "no cray by diving" rule and the baldie seasonal closure from 1 Nov to 31 Jan
see page 19
http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/WestLimits/westcoast_rules_2010.pdf

You should round up a few trailer boats and see if you can hire a out of season cray boat to act as a mothership carrying fuel, ice, food etc. Can't imagine it would be too much $$$ wise spread around between a few guys.
