Bull sharks

You will always get the odd one in the river. They often are not seen for a while but you can bet they are there. The bull shark is the only one that can survive in fresh water.

Bulls

Bull sharks have been caught up as far as the Guildford bridge so I'd say they go even further up than that.

Seen a very large one up the canning river one night cruising along the edge with its fin out of the water, easily 7-8 foot. Followed it along with a torch till it headed out deeper.

Years back someone got bitten by what was described as a bull shark while swimming between the jetties just upstream from Garrett road bridge. Not serious but enough for a heap of stitches

Apparently the bull sharks

Sun, 2010-02-21 10:25

Apparently the bull sharks get some sort of bug inside them and go into the fresh water because the bug/parasite or whatever it is can not surive in the freshwater and once the parasite or bug is gone they move back out into deeper water.

Sun, 2010-02-21 21:17

bulls sharks, like bream can survive in waters with low and no salinity. All sharks need salt otherwise their body deteriorates. Bulls are the ONLY sharks that have the ability for their body to create its own salt. Because of this reason, they can be found in nearly every sort of water. As long as the shark is able to swim there, there's always a chance it could be around.

Bull sharks have forever freeked me out because of this reason.

Bulls arnt the only bities to venture up into the rivers. Well they are down here in Perth anyway.

Used to get these little bastards as well as Bulls when chasing Barra in the Adelaide River in the N.T

Suprised me the first time i got one about 85km from the mouth of the Adelaide. Even got one above the Marrakai Rd crossing (above the tidal limit, fresh water), probably got a bit lost chasing food. I am sure he would have figured out pretty quickly to get back on the downstream side of the crossing!

But yeah the idea of a shark in a river up there wasnt to much of a concern, the crocs were :)

Take my chances with a shark over a croc anyday. You dont hear of many people surviving croc attacks, because to them you ARE food.

yea, i know, other stuff

yea, i know, other stuff always seem to journey their way to the river systems... But the bulls can actually live and survive quite happily there. They dont just venture in, they can call it home and reside in fresh waters or far from the oceans throughout rivers

They're finding more every minute!

Mon, 2010-02-22 00:23

They are finding more every minute. I wonder how long till they find a true freshwater shark(lives it's whole life in freshwater, can breed there, and doesnt need to go into saltwater). That would be cool if it was found in Australia. Another one to tick off on the uniquely Aussie species!

Sun, 2010-02-21 21:52

i have seen them near shelly bridge in the shallows as well. one thing to remember most shark attacks are mistaken identity, they are after food not people and in the river systems that arent so clean the sharks would navigate and feed by vibrations . this info is from what i have read so if wrong , so be itTongue out
