swan river mulloway vs blowfish
Submitted by ADAMANGLER on Tue, 2010-11-23 20:57
Hi guys, im just wondering if there is anywhere in the swan river where I could soak a big fillet of bait, sit back, wait, have a few brews and wait for the drag to peel off, preferably mulloway/anything big, even a bullshark!!! Or is the whole river infested with em!!

Yeah diehard, I have tried point walter and the blowies are everywhere!!! Have not tried blackwall yet, but Im sure it will just be the same. Im think like danno, live bait will be the only way.

Narrows, Causeway, Kingie
Narrows, Causeway, Kingie hole near Ron Courtney Island, the old brewery, Fish Market Reserve under the water pipe. Live bony herring and trumpeters work well so do live tailor.

definately go with the
definately go with the livie. bony herring are the best but trumps will do but not huge ones. if you can get some yellow tail (scads) in the lower reaches they work well as well

Thanks fellas, might try one
Thanks fellas, might try one of thoe locations this saturday night. whats the easiest way to catch some live bait.....using a herring rig and a burley cage, or a sabiki rig, guessing bait will be no good because of the blowies!

the narrows is usually quite good. casting 20g metal slices and diving lures and the like will get you a fair share of bait :) most are touching legal size now as well. fishin with lures wont get you many blowies either!

tailor
although tailor are used as livies, don't forget they still have a legal size limit - 300mm. That's a big bait...

Kingie hole - Ron Courtney
Hey fishintruckie, is that hole you speak of at the bottom of the steps? I know it's pretty deep but not sure how much. Lost some massive bream in those snags.
Also, how deep is it under the pipe at fish market? Didn't realise there was a hole there.
Used to get a few big ones at the end of Anstey Rd and at Pickering Park in Bassendean. Not so easy now without the jetty anymore though. There used to be a lot of big mullas upstream!

Sorry for the late reply
Sorry for the late reply Lunker, I have just got home from Broome. The kingie hole is at the west end of the island and drops down to nearly 7m. Easy to find in summer just look for the boats fishing it at night. Under the pipe at Fish Market is a bit harder to find the hole as it is very small but there is also a bit of structure under there as well and plenty of "arches" on the sounder when looking for somewhere to fish, live mullet work best up around that way. I have also had 50-60cm mulloway follow lures up behind the womens prison.

I reckon if you fish the upper swan you'd be able to use bait cos not many blowies there. I haven't caught any before on bait in the upper swan. if you fish the lower swan like canning bridge or narrows. definitely life bait. but be cautious of blue swimmers around on the bottom in the narrows. I've got liveys stolen by them. so maybe you could cast the livey out unweighted

i'm heading there tmr after
i'm heading there tmr after exam for some bream and hopefully a mulla or two. would be using dead bait unless i can hook up a tailor or two there.
I used to use a small running sinker on the main line and 20 or 40lb leader of about 30cm and cast it out. but i've learnt my lesson that the crabs will steal the livey that way so if i use a livey i'll just let it swim out unweighted. otherwise i'll use a running sinker for mulla.
they are very sensitive to tension so can't use a paternoster

i went to the narrows instead last thursday night. must have caught like 20 tailors. I've lost count. didn't get a mulloway adam but caught a pelican. stole my life bait and now he has a hook and my leader stuck in his beak. had a little run on another live bait and main line snapped.
