I backed out today
So did little Andy. N/wester ,big swell . North tide. I didn’t even hook up boat. I always look at live feed. No fish worth getting smashed.

Ah good I feel better then
Ah good I feel better then because I went out but then came back in because didn’t think catching a fish was worth risking running into a dumper. Only got a little tub. I wonder what the next couple of days will be like

I always check BOM local then
I always check BOM local then BOM coastal forecasts. Coastal is for out wide and can be much larger swell. It breaks on the five fathom in some areas at 3m swell

I reckon the swell was
I reckon the swell was pretty accurate up our way as I can't really launch in anything over 1.8. We actually had a good day out and nailed a good Dhu around 7kg and a few other bits and pieces.
Love the West!

Cheers, have bookmarked this
Cheers, have bookmarked this link. I'm a big fan of Fishranger, reads off BOM (hourly forecasts vs meteye's 3 hours), has 10 day forecasts and live wind.

Curndog, A longer period
Curndog,
A longer period swell is carrying much more energy, more volume per se...
As a guide for the west coast here we generally have swell periods of between 12-16 seconds.
16 seconds is getting up there, anything above 16 is a beast....
1.8 M @ 12 seconds is a mundane swell with little energy, a 1.8 mtr swell with a 16+ period is packing some punch....
On a long period swell you can look at the ocean and not see much happening between set waves, when the set waves arrive there will generally be more of them as they march towards the coast and you'll see the energy as it arrives and breaks on the beaches and reefs...
I'm not very good at explaining, maybe you could you tube it....
