Tailor Perth Northern Beaches

Boys,

Bagged out twice in last fornight north of Quinns - windy and weedy but worth the persistance!

Also got two each per night on two other nights.

Big size range - most betweeen 300 and 400, couple over 500 and 1 stonker for Perth waters (which cause i didnt take a picture i wont post, but I have a witness!).

Keep the pressure on all the way to the shore cause i lost several thinking i only had a (massive) pile of weed on when actually it was weed caught around the fish.......I also landed dozens of MASSIVE weed-fish and my back is was worse for the experiance.

None of the tailor put up a fight really, even the stonker was like dragging in a dead weight - think this was cause after the first run and retrieve so much weed slipped down the line around the fish's head.

Anyway, no complaints awesome fun and great way to spend a warm night,

Had similar reports of beachs all along the coast from Tims/T to Two Rocks.

Good work mate!

Green with envy Chris. I got the family rods and gear for chrissie, used to fish with Dad 1975-1981, did a bit of Bream fishing Swan river for a couple of years 2000-2002ish, now I got the bug back. (due to a long term illness)

But after spending the fourth night since Xmas day averaging 5 hours per session I figure I need to know something I don't know to realise some success... Can you help me at all? (Or can anyone?)

I got a few small pike and tailor one night off long point jetty, best thing I caught was a size crab in Safety Bay while teaching daughter how to cast and make bird's nests with her new combo.

Other than that I have no idea what I am missing or doing wrong. I don't care what fish we get as long as it can hit the dinner table! Been fishing for tailor with unweighted mulie, berley blob, lures, burley sinker, no luck.

Tried squid lures, bottom fished with squid/prawns- no luck. Long Point near ramp, Palm Beach Jetty dusk til midnight...I'm keen, just not getting results. If anyone can offer any advice for Rocko area it would be much appreciated- at this stage it seems a lot harder than it did when I was a kid in the 70's  I've now taken to crab nets, caught about 40 last night, threw 38 back!

Happy New Year all, I'd love to be able to post a few 'look what we did' pics sooner than later

The trick is to find out what lure/ bait they go for by trail and error.

They are very choosy to say the least.

They are around and are biting, .... go and find them, great fun indeed on light gear!

KISS principle mate

Turbo Tim - Great to see the family getting into fishing!!! (keeping the kids interested sometimes is difficult thou).

I've fished long point for twenty five plus years on and off, with our family lucky enoough to have a shack down there before the urban sprawl took over - from memory i think we go rid of the shack about 91' or should i say they go rid of us....anyway enough remembering the past; when its firing for tailor its hard do anything wrong, but tailor fishing can be hit and miss and you'll get nothing at all regardless of the location when its off - i havent known long point firing for tailor for several years now, but they are still there in limited numbers....

Long point has the advantage of being able to hide from the wind if need be, ie walk around the other side of the point for flathead and skippy and tailor when the wind is down (all the way from long point back to secret harbour is good with no wind - just head from the jetty to the point and around the otherside and you'll find all sorts)....its a big walk in soft sand thou :)

On the Wanbro/pt kennedy side of long point (north side) don't limit yourself to near the jetty, when they put that thing in they picked a spot without much ground stucture and then pulled out anything else that fish like to hang around. In saying that they did limit the damage to immediately near the ramp so a little walk (maybe 500 or so yards eaither side can produce some good stuff - especially whiting and last time i was there we picked up a couple of cobbler in the shallows - there was a guy in the paper a while back that even landed a mulloway....but how to catch a mulla is a whole differant conversation and one for which i wish i was an expert).

Dont over complicate your rig mate, a traditional salmon rig will get you good results most of the time - regardless of species targeted and especially when youre just finding your feet again.  I personally dont really bother much for burley cages nowadays, unless targeting herring and similar.  Just main line to three way swivel, with a star sinker on about 2 foot of line off one side and a gang of three or four hooks on about the same length of line off the other side - pick your hook size to match your bait - too small and when they bite they wont hit the hook, too big and when they bite they'll spit the hook and/or your bait will break up before they bite anyway.

Bait with it's head up and have your third hook finishing about 2cms from the tail (then cut about 1cm off the tail). Cast it out and keep the line tought no tight but tought.  Let it soak and dont keep bringing it in to check your bait too often. (also let your mullies thaw out - as frozen mullies defrost on the hook and break up). (fish an hour before sunset and an hour after for starters and see how you go. 2 hours wont bore the kids too much either.)

let us know how you go..... but KISS priciple is the key when starting out.

To catch the kids a whiting with their (presuming) light egg beater rods - just use a dropper rig - light weight on the very end of the line - about 350mm back from the weight tie a loop in the line and knot it, about another 300mm back from that tie another knotted loop.  Put a small long shank hook on both loops (droppers) by folding the line and poking it thru the eye of the hook and then around the shank and pull tight. bait it with a bit of squid (just enough to cover the hook) and throw her in the drink.....

Hey ChrisG my family had a shack at long point for 20 plus years.....very productive fishing if you know where to look.

Still have memories as a kid, whole bay shoulder to shoulder with tailor fisherman in the summer months, and proffessionals chasing whitebait.

We were one of the last shacks on the hill towards warnboro

haha - same same!

our shack was nearer the point - pretty much in line with where bunnings is now but on the coast obviously.

yep great memories of tailor almost staight from the hook to the wood fired hot plate most evenings and squid from the dinghy early each moring.  definately see why the guys up a Grey, Wedge and Blowholes etc dont want to give their shacks up!

definately remember shoulder to shoulder as far as the eye could see - dont see that nowadays anywhere
