Talica Vs. New Ocea Jigger

Hi Guys,

I am in the market for a new small" overhead, running 40-50lb (pe2.5 - 3)

Now I have narrowed my choices down to getting either a Talica 8 Single Speed or the new Ocea Jigger 1500PG...

What are your thoughts?? Price difference isn't an issue.. Will be using it for jigging, drift baiting and a bit of trolling

if trolling is involved , thats a point to the lever drag.  talica also would be awesome driftbaiting.

the ocea jigger is one sweet reel though

The Ocea Jigger is by far a better reel IMO. Have had a Talica 10 and couldn't compare it to the new Ocea Jigger 1500PG.

The OJ is a lot smoother and feels a lot more comfortable to jig with. Its great for drift baiting as well.

The Talica would be better suited to trolling and has more drag than the OJ, but if its going to be mainly used for jigging I would get the Ocea Jigger.

I'm yet to see the new OJ, but very keen too.

The Talica single-speed is a better jigger than the two-speed though, and wasn't yours the two speed?

I'm reasonably happy with the TAC8, but certainly more as a PE4 reel, I'd go the OJ 1500 for PE3.

I love my OJ 1500, but one

Mon, 2011-09-19 11:32

I love my OJ 1500, but one complaint is that it could use more drag - especially when trying to stop sambos. Perhaps I should look at lighter rod/line to put it on, but with current setup it feels like it could handle more.

You can get uprated drag plates and washers for the 2000 (which apparently give you near on 100% more drag than factory), but so far I am not convinced you can for the 1500.

The Smoothdrag people tell me you can get some drag washers to suit one of the new Trinidads, then trim them a bit to fit, but havent had anyone which can show me a plate to fit.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Mate if you pull out the drag

Mon, 2011-09-19 19:09

Mate if you pull out the drag washers and measure the inside/outside diameters and thickness with a set of verniers and ring Erskines they'll custom make them for not much extra cost, I've done it over the phone a few times now with no probs. I don't know whether the lapped wsahers and carbontex drags treated with Cals grease will give you twice as much drag as the dartanium drag but it will give you more and smoother start up. The Ocea Jiggers will also give you about 5 kilos more drag than the Talicas.

Have done a bit more asking around, and seems like there are no plates being made for any smaller than an OJ2000

Washers are available though

Righto, did you ring Erskines direct on (07) 4054 6058, they'd be the only people who should be able to help you in Oz.

Not sure what the go is with them?!

Interesting thread this. Not wanting to hijack it but I'm in the process of doing the same thing, hence the reason I'm selling the Saltiga 30T in the classifieds. I did not think of the Ocea Jigger. How would the 1000 or 1500 compare to a Saltiga 30? I had the Z30 as the current leader over the Tac 8.

Thats not a jigger!

It weighs about twice what the other reels do, and its capacity is probably a little higher than the TAC8.

PE3/600m? Its huge @ 580g. Its at least a size too big when you can get away with the OJ1500 @ 390g

480g there Jamie ;) Its quite a light reel for how hard you can (supposedly) push it but a little big for PE3 IMO. Then, I dont run PE3 on mine. Think I just fit 600m of PE4 saltiga boat braid on mine (thats zero backing and packed tight). Maybe it was 500m?

Well they are priced very well at the moment, nearly on par ;) I know its a heavier reel, but for the price am I better off? I don't think I'll go astray either way (ocea jigger or SOM that is)

Ok this link suggests the ocea jigger is a Trinidad equivalent or close to it. That would make the Talica a step up? The weights shown though are a little different. What am I missing?

Sure the Ocea Jigger shares some common parts with the trinidad, but that doesn't mean the Talica is a step up, its a step sideways.

The Ocea Jigger is a dedicated jigger, with features not on the talica or the trinidad.

Mate any specs or a link to that reel? I still feel the Saltiga 20 or 30 star drag is better than the TAC 8 as it feels more balanced in the hand. Would be keen to see all options. I may even end up getting a Ryoga Bay jigger yet!!

Slightly bigger, but gives you the option of working around the derwent, out wide, and yet small enough for your shallow stuff. Great little reels
