Tandem trailer with only 3 wheels
Did anyone see that poor bugger at Ocean Reef on Saturday morning who was missing a wheel from his tandem axle trailer?
That poor bugger was me.
Not sure what happened. Got a speed wobble on the freeway at about 95km/hr which is really unusual. Sorted that out and kept on my way to the ramp. Upon turning into the launching bay I notice the rear most wheel really kicked out...much more than normal when you turn. Hopped out to see the outer bearing completely shredded.
Continued to launch the boat and pulled the pots (for zero return).
Came back to shore, retrieved with only 3 wheels and drove very gingerly up the hill and parked the trailer. Off to get a new bearing from the shop and spent the next 45 minutes in the car park fixing up the bloody mess. The bearings were not quite 12months old.
So the lessons learned - dont just keep spare bearings in the boat for long trips.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

cause
bugger, do you know what the cause was. Water intrusion or a bad bearing. Timley reminder for all to be prepared as even well maintained equipment can fail.

No idea
The bearings, or at least the shards of steel that were left, looked to be in good condition. No sign of water intrusion, the grease was clean and not milky. Oh well, at least it got me to do a full bearing and grease change yesterday.

Get yaself one of these mate.
Get yaself one of these mate. You can carry your spare tyre on a complete hub. I had some tack welds put on the attachment bolts to stop (or slow down) some prick knicking it

I've got a double sided stub
I've got a double sided stub axle with dual spares on the drawbar. Twin full sets of spare, hub and bearing assemblies as well as doubling as a drop down wheel for beach launching.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Pay a couple of extra bucks
Pay a couple of extra bucks and make sure your bearings are made in Japan and not China... The salesman will tell you there is no difference but there is a massive difference.

Japan
They were Japanese. That's what's so annoying.

Apart from water ingress
Apart from water ingress most likley cause would be either too much play in bearing or too tight, hub should be just warm not hot after a couple of ks jack wheel up and spin wheel should rotate freeley hold wheel 12 and 6 oclock should not have any rock/movement.
