Tent recomendations

Used to go camping every weekend with the wife prior to kids and want to get back into it. Ive still got all the gear but want to upgrade the tent as i have a oztrail 6v plus which was great for the 2 of us over a weekend but am looking for something bigger and more sturdy. I want a large canvas tent that we will set up for 2 weeks at a time in a caravan park so am not worried about set up/pack up time. I like the idea of a 3 room tent so the kids can be 1 end, me and the wife at the other end and all our gear in the third. I have been looking inline at the Oztrail Chatteau 12 but am a bit worried it might be too big and wont fit in a lot of caravan sites. I also want to see one setup prior to parting with that much coin. I cant seem to find a descent camping shop i  Perth that has this style of tent in stock or set up to view-all they have are thw done style set up or the black wolfe 360 which is a bit small for what i am after. So my question is what have any of you experienced either in relation to a quality camping shop or tent experiences currently or in the past.

Cheers

dont know how old your kids

Sun, 2017-01-15 23:20

dont know how old your kids are but I use to take two tents. A four dome tent for the kids and their friends and reasonable size two room tent for me and the missus. They were the oztrail brand but that worked great for us. But for good canvas tent I reckon the black wolf turbo tents are the way to go.

Oztent

Mon, 2017-01-16 01:05

Mate I've had a Oztent for years and it's been epic! My other mates who have kids also have them (you can join 2 together). Obviously it starts to get a bit pricey (the poor man pays twice I say) but if your kids share a basic dome tent like Ezi said above and then buy a decent Black Wolf or Oztent as a primary. Coz theres gunna be a time when the kids just don't want to tent it with mum n dad. haha.
My Oztent is a RV4 with the extras like side and front awning panels and fly and has stood the time up against the harshest of weather. HD plastic flooring and 150mm up the sides means it will never leak from the ground up like a lot of other canvas tents do.
Only flaw is when its packed up it's 1.8m long! so kinda need roof racks etc to cart it around.

 We have the Coleman Chalet

Mon, 2017-01-16 07:19

We have the Coleman Chalet CV 9, Its PLENTY big enough to have two older kids at one end me n the missus at the other and the porta cott in the middle for junior snapper....

http://www.colemanaustralia.com.au/product/chalet-9-cv-tent/1217814?contextCategory=0101#.WHwAJ_l97IU

No way i would want a bigget tent than this...

Its fine in some rain but we dont go storm chasing either when we go camping...

Its sturdy and with a lifetime warranty if it fucks out you take it back...

The key for us now is wind breaks wind breaks wind breaks ( especially going north!! )....

If you are in a van park you'll be fine anyway i'd imagine....

I built a 4 x 4m shelter out of alli square tube that has a roof and rear wall and removable shade cloth for the sides and heavy mat for the floor, its been epic as our night and day living space as no body wants to sit in a tent!! IMO most of the gazebos you see are crap unless they are nestled in with windbreaks windbreaks windbreaks and strapped down hard ( they are usually the most common kite you see up north ) but nowadays if i had my time again i would have bought one of these ( and probably still will )

http://www.colemanaustralia.com.au/product/event-12/1253632?contextCategory=0104#.WHwCJvl97IU

It isnt the best pick of these you really need to see them set up they are an impressive bit of kit and would be a good space for you and the family to keep you out of the tent which really is just for sleeping and changing in...

The other option is like Eazi said above is to get a tent for ma n pa and one for the kids or even one each for the kids... You can get the small 1-2 manners that fit a swag and bag for about $60 for a good one then there is no fighting about who messed everything up!!

Have fun mate and good to hear you are getting the camping mojo back - I hope the above helps

I got a 3 room coleman Montana for $150  when getaway in osbourne park shut, was missing a pole that I brought from coleman for $40. Took it to shelter bay in December and boy did it get a workout from the wind. Just gotta be lucky!

Kids love their own tent!

Tue, 2017-01-17 08:36

I have the OzTent RV5, it's great, altho, yes it's a bit of a lump to travel with ( I put mine in the boat)

the kids used to love having their own tent, just el cheap pop up jobbies from BCF for about forty bucks and a swag, very cool for kids,

you get the space and privacy, they get the adventure of setting up their own " camp" and their privacy!!!

Thanks for the responses. Kids are a bit little to sleep on their own. Only 2 and 4. Pretty keen to keep them under my roof for now.

We have a canvas 1512 same

Tue, 2017-01-17 19:26

We have a canvas 1512 same as the oztrail one but its branded wildcountry i think i brought it from rays when they shut down only used it a couple of times but its great plenty of room and it doesnt feel to big and if it is juat dont put up the front awning. But by using the awning there is no need to take a gazebo like shade.

The down side is its heavy approx 80kgs i can put it up and down on my own although it probably takes 30mins and down to 20 with a hand.

oztrail canvas cabin 12 x 15

Wed, 2017-01-18 09:11

is what I have, and yes, tent plus steel poles weighs around 80kgs! tent is around 30kgs, poles around 50kgs.

EXTREMELY sturdy tent, and by a long shot, they generally have a cooler internal temperature than the typical dome tents made from parasilk materials. this is important when you have kids!

I have done some big trips in mine, including 2.5 months in ganarloo/ningaloo. it sleeps me + wife + 2 kids and a dog VERY easy, plus all the shit we carry with us. we rigged up an awning + sides, that gets fixed to the edge/steel poles of the tent, and provides an approx. 3 x 4.5 m living area.

it has survived some serious storms/rains/winds, with no signs of failing (either water ingress or wind damage). nearly

we went down the path of heavy duty dome tents, etc, but once we had invested in the smaller 12x9 canvas tent (when the family was smaller), we realised the value/durability/element resistance/temperature difference of the canvas cabin type tents, sold everything and bought the biggest one available.

its now 4 years old, and gets used on average 4 - 6 weeks a year, and has no signs of wear or damage.

 +1 for the oztent! get

Wed, 2017-01-18 11:57

+1 for the oztent! get yourself an rv5 plus a tag along tent (cheaper version that requires the full oztent to connect to) for the kids. Pricey but awesome and very easy setup/pulldown. I can setup my rv3 in the same time it takes to roll out a swag, hence my swag has not been used since purchase

Bucko, Sorry mate only just saw your Q...

We actually had a coleman dome that was smaller than the one we have now and before i was organised with the full spread of windbreaks we copped a full bettering on the defense land south of yardi one year.

The tent held up but... Several of the poles were ted and the missus took it back, we actually ended up trading it up for the model we have now...

Maybe i got the lifetime warranty wrong, I'll blame that on the missus?!?!
