Making Territory Fishing Even Better

The Territory Government is working hard to ensure recreational fishing in the NT remains a great part of our lifestyle and the best in Australia and the world.
Fisheries Minister Chris Natt today announced a $400,000 Territory-wide recreational fishing survey of local and visiting anglers to take the industry forward.
“We want to make recreational fishing in the Territory even better - that’s why it is so important that anglers get involved in this survey.” Mr Natt said.
“We want to hear from anglers about where they fish, what species they target and how they think the fishing experience can be enhanced.
“Whether it’s catching a barra or trawling for mackerel, Territorians and visitors to the Territory love getting out on the water – and we want to keep it that way.
“Recreational fishing is enjoyed by about 40,000 Territorians each year and is a major tourism drawcard.
“We have the highest participation rate in recreational fishing in the country and the highest boat ownership per capita.
“The comprehensive survey will also assess the value of recreational fishing to the Territory’s economy and the number of local and visiting anglers that fish our waterways.
“The data gathered will ensure the ongoing sustainable management and development of our valuable fisheries and will also be used to look at infrastructure and maintenance issues.
“Planning for the survey will commence over the next couple of months and collection of data will run over 2008/09 and 2009/10.
“We want to hear from recreational anglers and I encourage all fishers to take part in this important work,” he said.
